WASHINGTON WP)—The first
big tanker-load of Arab oil to
reach the United States in five
months arrived Tuesday at Nor
folk, Va., the Federal Energy
Office announced.
The shipment marks the be
ginning of the end of the U.S.
imports of Arab oil dried up last
oil shortage that began when
November; federal officials now
expect the imports to increase
over the next month or two until
they match the levels of last
September.
But the Arab nations have not
made it clear whether they would
increase the production beyond
that level, and the Federal En
ergy Office has forecast small but
chronic petroleum shortages for
the I rest of the year.
The Arab nations cut off oil
shipments to the United States
in October to bring political pres
sure against their Middle East
enemy, Israel; on March 19, after
progress toward a troop disen
gagement, the Arabs lifted their
oil embargo.
On both occasions, the effects
were not felt here for a few weeks
because of the time it took for
the last—and now the first—
tanker to make the long journey
from the Persian Gulf around
Africa and across the Atlantic to
U.S. shores.
An FEO spokesman said U.S.
Customs officials reported the
arrival Tuesday in Norfolk of the
first major tankerload of Arab
oil: A hefty 344,000 barrels of
crude oil from Algeria, carried in
the Italian tanker Elba Lolligeiti.
The FEO said it did not know
the identity of the importer or
the eventual destination of the
oil.
Meanwhile, anticipating the re
turn of Arab oil, the FEO has
told U.S. petroleum companies to
draw upon current inventories to
boost gasoline allocations for
April.
Motorists will find it easier to
get gasoline this week, but they
probably will have to pay more
for each gallon, the American
Automobile Association said Tues
day in its weekly survey.

break in garbage
Two professors and a staff of
students spent their spring break
sifting through ancient garbage
piles.
The garbage piles are located
in the lower Pecos River canyons
and contain the discards of some
of the original Texans dating
back to 9,000 B.C.
There they have fallen under
the inquisitive hands of Dr. Harry
Shafer and Dr. Vaughn Bryant,
both of the Department of Soci
ology and Anthropology.
“In the new world, north of
Central Mexico there were no
written records before Columbus,”
explained Bryant. “We’re trying
to reconstruct for posterity what
the first Texans were like.”
“These garbage piles are our
alphabet,” he continued. “They
threw away what they didn’t
want, what was worn out, broken
and discarded. We figure out
usage patterns. We find seeds
and stone chips and broken tools.
The task is to decide what they
would have said if they had left
a written record.”
The refuse piles are called
“burned rock middens” and, ac
cording to Shafer, they are the
direct result of ancient process
ing of desert plants for food. The
middens, by the hundreds, chron
icle the movements of the nomadic
Indians who survived in the
region on sotol, wild onions,
snails, acorns and prickly pear
cactus.
“But no one knows much about
them. However, with the remains
we can identify the food being
processed and reconstruct their
seasonal and regional move
ments,” he claimed.
“By looking at their by-prod
ucts,” added Bryant, “we can tell
what they were doing. We don’t
dig just for artifacts. We also
search for other clues like copro-
lites (preserved feces) and fossil
pollen.”
“From coprolites we can learn
what foods man ate, how he pre
pared them and the general state
of the early man’s health,” he
went on. “The fossil pollen tells
us what the climate used to be.
After all, you can’t tell the effects
of an environment on people if
you don’t know what the environ-
