Southwest Conference in
big trouble: Thompson
WACO, Tex. (A>) — J. Neils
Thompson of the University of
Texas, president of the South
west Conference and vice presi
dent of the NCAA, says the SWC
faces a “real rocky road” to sur
vival.
In an interview in the spring
issue of Dave Campbell’s Texas
Football Magazine, Thompson
‘Mullets’ take
Intramural track
A squad of old track jocks named
the Mullets upset the Black Awareness
Committee to take the team title in the
1974 Intramural track meet.
The Mullets bolstered by 14 points
from the field events placed enough
people in the running events to top the
fast BAC, 35.2 to 34.
Utay, the class C winner placed
third, two-tenths ahead of Puryear.
Krueger Hall won the women’s divi
sion.
No records were broken in the
All-University meet but four records
fell in qualifying.
Footballer Lester Hayes, running
for BAC, broke the 100-yd. dash
record of 9.9 (1961) with a 9.8 and the
220-yd. dash record of 22.9 (1973)
with a 22.0.
Bradley Kohls disposed of the
880-yd. run record (2:03.0, 1953) with
a 2:00.2.
N-l’s Sneed shattered the year old
120 hurdles record of 15.1 with a
blistering 13.4.
Jim Jeter noted that the meet was
very enjoyable. “It was very well
organized.”

says, “It (the SWC) can survive
but it’s going to be challenged to
pull its horns in at some spots.
“I had some pretty good hopes
for the conference until the prob
lems of supporting a woman’s
program, too, came up. I still feel
like good operations in several
spots can bring the conference
back. We’ve got to have the full
input of the University of Hous
ton and a turn around of the SMU
situation. I think it’s just too bad
we’ve had to wait so long to get
Houston fully involved in the
league.”
Thompson says of the pros:
“You can look at three or four
of our schools that have been af
fected and it’s a pretty big im
pact . . . undoubtedly the pros
have hurt in the Dallas-Fort
Worth area and I think they have
hurt in the Houston area. We have
to remember we’re in the enter
tainment business whether we like
it or not.”
Thompson says he believes pri
vate schools can compete. In fact,
he says a coach like Darrell Royal
of Texas might even be better
off at a private school.
“He (Royal) wouldn’t have the
distractions there that he has here
at Texas,” Thompson says. “We
have a lot of distractions here
and they are annoying to a
coach.”
Thompson was asked about
Health, Education and Welfare
directives which call for equal
coaching in women’s athletics.
“As the guidelines were writ
ten as of December, which are
the latest I have seen, I would
give collegiate athletics as we
know it today no more than five
years,” Thompson says.
He says, “Somehow or the other
we are going to have to find a
way to support the women’s pro
grams here at Texas. Now, if the
University doesn’t do this right,
in my opinion, the whole thing
can come down around our should
ers.”
What with financial problems,
recruiting, pro sports, and the
HEW, Thompson says, “I tell you,
at the moment, it’s a matter of
survival for all of us ... ”
