HOPEful get help
BATTALION CLASSIFIED
CContinued from page 1)
the Christmas break to make it
easier for wheelchairs to get up
onto sidewalks.
“One of the basic purposes of
the organization is to help the
University understand the needs
of these handicapped students and
for the students to help one an
other with special problems that
may arise,” Gardner said.
“So far, TRC has had good cor
poration from the University in
dealing with problems of wheel
chair students getting into some
of the older classroom buildings,”
Gardner added. Howard Perry, as
sistant vice-president for student
services, is also involved in help
ing the students organize.
One of the first projects that
HOPE will undertake is publica
tion of a handbook to assist new
students in finding ramps, eleva
tors, rest rooms and water foun
tains. These facilities will be
markedon a campus map to be
drawn up by the students.
Perry and Gardner suggested
the students conduct a survey of
all the buildings more useful to
students in wheelchairs and on
crutches. Only buildings construc
ted in the last few years at A&M
have special features incorporated
to make it easier for wheelchair
students to get about the campus.
“THE PROBLEM we face now”
said Gardner, “is trying to adapt
some of the older buildings on
campus to the needs of the handi
capped students.” He said ramps
were being constructed at the en
trances of classroom buildings
where it was impractical to lift
a wheelchair over several dozen
steus.
HOPE is also working on iden
tifying of all university facilities
that are specially suited for hand
icapped persons in wheelchairs.
“In order to identify a building
or area accessible to a wheelchair
we could probably use small
square signs denoting that a par
ticular area or building has facil
ities for wheelchairs. The interna
tional symbol used for this is a
simple side-view of a figure in a
wheelchair,” Gardner said.

Society, is now accepting appli
cations for the Host and Public
Relations Committee.
Apply at The Student Programs
Office before 5 p.m. April 5.
Student opinions
Town Hall individual preference
polls will be the principle criteria
by which performers for the 1974-
1975 series of concerts are chosen
to appear.
The student opinion polls con
taining names of various popular
recording artists will be available
at Sbisa, Krueger-Dunn, and
Duncan Dining Halls, aboard all
shuttle buses, at the University
Center and, for off-campus stu
dents, in each of the different
apartment managers’ offices.
Surveys are to be deposited in the
ballot box provided.
The polls will be reviewed by
the Town Hall selection commit
tee and attempts will be made to
coordinate the open dates on the
most preferred artists’ concert
tours with the open dates on the
Town Hall calendar.
Unfortunately, the same artists
who are popular at TAMU are
very likely to be popular else
where also. Many bands make
commitments more than a year
in advance and are not available
on certain dates. Hopefully, by
scheduling Town Hall selection
committee meetings earlier this
year than usual this problem will
be eliminated.
