One might catch Emory Bol
lard smiling a lot these days. It
could be because for the first
time since assuming the head
football coaching job at A&M he
has a lot to smile about.
Of the 102 candidates who re
ported for spring football drills
yesterday, Bellard could gaze
across Kyle Field and pick out
43 returning lettermen, a privi
lege he has never been afford
ed since reporting here at the
end of 1971.
Only six lettermen are lost
from last year’s squad. Safety
Larry Ellis, tackle Bud Trammell,
quarterback Tim Trimmier, cen
ter Darrell Taliaferro and guard
Mike Bruton have all played out
their eligibility while fullback
Alvin Bowers has been dropped
from the squad for disciplinary
reasons.
Bowers is the only starter lost
from the offense while the start
ing defensive unit returns intact.
“We have a lot of work to do,”
said Bellard, “but we’re far ahead
of any other starting point we’ve
had here. The players are in good
physical condition; they’re in a
good frame of mind and they’re
40 per cent more knowledgeable
than a year ago.”
Bellard said there would be no
scrimmage Saturday as previous
ly announced.
“We’ll work on fundamentals
this week,” he said, “and we’ll
scrimmage every Saturday after
this one.”
Two lettermen, linebacker Ed
Simonini and safety A1 Thur
mond, were absent from work
outs yesterday. Simonini is nurs
ing a sprained ankle and a dislo
cated elbow while Thurmond is a
member of Aggie baseball team.
Simonini is expected to be able to
return to practice before the Ma
roon-White game April 27.
“We have the right people in
the right positions,” said Bellard,
“because they’ve been there a
year or two so we don’t have to
waste time placing personnel. We
can work on a lot of things.”
Quarterback will be attracting
a lot of attention this spring as
five quality candidates are vying
for the job. Returning are David
Walker and Mike Jay, who di
rected last year’s attack, and Da
vid Shipman, injured last season.
New faces are transfer Kent Bal
lard and Carl Menger, who en
rolled in A&M in January and
will be playing as a freshman in
the fall. All made all-state while
in high school and any could con
ceivably be taking the snap on
the first series of downs in the
fall.
Carl Roaches, who starred the
past two years as a split end
and kickoff return specialist, will
be given a shot at halfback, the
position he played in high school,
where he gained over 2,000 yards
as a senior at Houston Smiley.
By positions, the lettermen re
turning next fall include:

Roaches; left tackle—Glenn Buj-
noch, Dennis Swilley; left guard
