Track fans were treated to a
Southwest Conference rarity, an
Aggie win in the mile run, as
A&M won a triangular meet with
SMU and TCU Saturday on Kyle
Field.
A&M found no real contest in
the team competition as the Ag
gies ran up a whopping total of
96 points to easily outdistance
SMU’s 45 and the Horned Frogs’
28.
There were plenty of contests
in the individual events as upsets
and season bests seemed to rule
the day.
The biggest surprise of the
meet had to be Jacob Yemme’s
win in the mile. The Aggie sopho
more from Ghana entered the
meet with a best personal time of
4:25.1 and was expected to be no
more than a slight bother to
SMU miler Jeff Dixon. Yemme
started back of the pack and
stayed in eighth place in the nine-
man field while A&M’s Paul
Goodman took the lead to provide
the pace. Dixon took the lead on
the third lap and opened it up at
the gun to stretch to a 12-yard
lead over Yemme. Down the back-
stretch it looked as if it would be
Dixon's race all the way home but
Yemme began to narrow the dis
tance between the two going in to
the turn. Coming down home
stretch, Yemme picked up eight
yards and caught the Mustang
about 15 yards from the finish.
Dixon put on a final burst of
speed to try and hold off Yemme
but the Aggie lunged at the tape
to take first. Yemme’s time was
4:14.43 while Dixon was clocked
at 4:14.49. A&M’s Pat Bradley
and Danny Jones finished third
and fourth, respectively, as the
much-improved Jones ran one of
the best miles of his career.
Phil McGuire was a pleasant
surprise in the high jump, clear
ing 6-10 to take first in an Aggie

sweep of the event. A crowd ga
thered as he went after a school
record and set the bar at the mys
tical 7-foot mark but he could not
quite come up with the required
leap. The win was a personal tri
umph for McGuire as it proved to
be his finest effort since a
6-10% mark two years ago as a
freshman. McGuire hurt his ankle
the fall of his sophomore year
and was hindered all last season.
He has been jumping well this
year and it appears he has final
ly completed the long comeback
from injury.
Shifton Baker was the most
prolific Aggie scorer, finishing
second in three events and third
in another. The freshman sensa
tion from Elgin cleared 6-2% in
his first attempt of the year at
the high jump to take second and
was also runner-up in the long
jump (21-10) and the 120-yard
high hurdles (15.0). He has done
much better times than his 55.1
third-place finish in the 440-yard
intermediate hurdles but he was
undoubtedly tiring from the long
day of work.
Other Aggie winners include:
Tom Owen in the long jump (22-
6%), Scottie Jones in the 120-
yard high hurdles (14.4), Tim
Brown in the discus (140-5), Brad
Blair in the pole vault (15-0) and
Charles Dawson in the 100 (9.7).
SMU and TCU will both be back
Saturday to compete in the Col
lege Station Relays along with
A&M, Houston, Baylor and La
mar University.
Some of the top prep athletes
in the state will also be compet
ing in the high school division of
the meet Saturday.
