By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DAYTON, Ohio—Senior guard Donald Smith netted a season- high 32 points to lead Dayton to a 97-82 upset of second-ranked Notre Dame in college basketball Monday night. The Flyers built up an early 13-point lead and stayed ahead the rest of the way. The Irish closed the gap to 44-38 at half time, but the nearest they could get after that was four points. Center John Shumate tossed in 29 points for Notre Dame, suf fering only its second loss in 26 games. Dayton now is 19-7. The Cougars were ahead 74- 65 with five minutes remaining behind the scoring of freshman Otis Birdson, who ended with 23 points. Scholz then came in and led a full-court press with his three steals in a 31-second span. He didn’t score a point, but was giv en credit for four assists as the Dolphins cut the margin to 74-71. Jacksonville finally went ahead at 77-76 when Leon Benbow, who finished with 27 points, hit a jump shot with 3:25 left to play. Birdson tied it at 77-77 with a free throw but Henry Williams’ outside shot gave the Dolphins the lead at 79-77, and they held it the rest of the way. Houston, 16-9, had led 43-42 at halftime. By TONY GALLUCCI The A&M baseball team pound ed out 51 hits in five games last weekend in sweeping the opening SWC series with Baylor and a doubleheader with Southwestern Louisiana to remain undefeated at 11-0. Senior southpaw Jackie Binks started off the weekend with an 8-4 win in the Ags’ first confer ence game of the year. Sandy Bate started out the scoring with a walk in the second. He advanced to second on a wild throw from third and came in on a single by Fred Russ. Baylor obtained their first score in the fourth on a triple by centerfielder Richard Clopton, who was driven in by Pee Wee Serna. Mike Schraeder and Jim Bratsen ended the Bears scoring that inning with a smoking double play on a drive to shortstop Russ. BU brought in three runs on a walk, a hit batsmen and singles by Clopton and Rick Russell. With Baylor leading 4-1, the Aggies connected on two singles, two doubles and a triple, aided by a walk, an error and a sac rifice brought in five runs to go ahead of the Bears for good 6-4. Paul Miller and Bill Raymer scored in the sixth to round out the scoring for the Ags. Designated hitter Sandy Bate picked up two singles in two tries and was walked in his other two trips to the plate. He also scored two runs. Catcher Mike Frazier blasted two hits, a double and a triple, in four bats. Binks went the distance in pick ing up the win, while Charles Sherman, the eventual loser, last ed but five innings. Rick Fox took over in the fifth for Sherman but lasted only two-thirds of an inn ing giving up three hits. James Denneny finished up for Baylor. A&M came up with a couple of big innings in the second game to defeat the Bears again, 11-3. Bate came up with three bases on an error to start the five-run fourth. Schraeder doubled to score Bate and was scored himself on an error, a walk to Raymer and Tom my Hawthornes’ single. Raymer and Hawthorne scored on Paul Miller’s double and John Alvin Woods’ single. Baylor collected three runs off starter Clint Thomas in the fifth and sixth before Jimmy Juhl ap peared to retire the side and close out Baylor’s scoring. The Ags collected six more runs in the bottom of the sixth through a series of base hits, sacrifices, walks, errors and wild pitches. Consequently, only one run was earned. Miller batted four times for the Ags, being hit by a pitch, walked twice and hit a soaring double. Two Aggie runs were attributed to Miller. Senior Woods was good for two singles and one run in two at bats. Raymer, Schraeder and Bate all scored two runs each to boost the Ag score. Thomas in obtaining his third win of the year struck out five batters in his five and one-third innings of duty. Juhl came on two-thirds innings to ice the four- hitter. Bear Dub Kilgo absorbed to fan three batters in one and the loss. s In the Saturday nightcap A&M got lone runs in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, to hold the lead, 5-2, going into the eighth inning. Perry Arthur pitched for the Ags until the eighth and was bailed out by Don Bravenec. Bra- venec himself got into a jam and was helped out by Juhl, who ob tained his first win. Baylor tied the game, 5-5, on two runs in the ninth when Juhl came on with two outs and two men on base. He walked James Keller to load the bases, then calmly struck out ex-teammate Kilgo. The game went ten innings, when Schraeder doubled to left center and was brought in by a left center shot,courtesy of Russ to end the game. In the first of two doublehead ers with power-hitting USL, the Aggies dominated 3-1 and 6-2. In the first game Paul Miller connected on all three times at bat in leading the Ags to the win. Bravanec went the distance to pick up his first win. Miller was two-for-four in the second game and scored two runs to again pace the Ags. Leftfielder A1 Thurmond con nected on three hits including one double for A&M while David Bux- kamper hit a double and a single and scored a run for the Ags also. The Aggies will play USL in another doubleheader today be ginning at 1 p. m. Basketball season ends on sour note Lanny Van Eman and Dean Tolson finished their respective basketball careers at Arkansas in a big way Saturday night while handing the Texas Aggies a 97- 86 Southwest Conference round- ball whipping. Van Eman, coach of the Roz- orbacks the last four years, got A&M’s first women’s basketball team concludes its first home season of competition tonight at 6 in G. Rollie White Coli seum. Tolson rammed home 45 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the emotional Hogs wanted the finale for Van Eman. The contest was never really close as the Hogs led 50-37 at halftime. Rick Medlock and Dennis White each chipped in 15 points to assist the 6-8 Tolson with the Hogs of fensive punch. A&M did rally to a 63-58 defi cit mid-way through the final period but the Razorbacks tallied 12 unanswered points to ice the game. Aggie John Thornton continued his second half assault of confer ence foes with 20 points to pace the A&M scoring. Randy Knowles hit 16 in his final game for A&M. Jerry Mercer and Ray Roberts added 15 each and Webb Wil liams hit 12. Coach Shelby Metcalf was most pleased with Williams perform ance. “I was really happy with Webb’s play. I hope he picks up next year where he left off.” Thornton and Mercer paced the A&M rebounding with 12 each. Metcalf said he was not disap pointed with the Aggies’ season.
