Carps looks to future By SALLY HAMILTON Staff Writer This interview is the final in stallment of a four-part history of the Corps. The Batt has at tempted to outline Corps tradi tions and purposes as a prelude to Military Weekend.—Ed In reporting the history of the TAMU Corps of Cadets, a re-oc curring complaint is heard from all cadets through all ages; that the Corps will soon be gone. That was the prediction when undergraduate girls were admit ted to the school in 1963 and the Corps was made completely non- compulsory in 1965. The size of the Corps has continually declin ed since then but it remains a unique institution and a potent influence on campus. Col. Thomas R. Parsons, com mandant of the Corps, was a jun ior at the time the freshmen were moved to the old Bryan airfield in 1947. “I remember distinctly,” said Parsons, “our reaction was that the Corps was finished . . . ruined forever. Sure enough, we became stronger because of it. It Mademoiselle (Continued from Page 1) a month and a single bedroom utility apartment rents for $300 a month.” “She walked right up to stu dents, introduced herself and started talking. She caught them in the MSC snack bar, the bowling alleys and under trees,” said Evans. “The students responded like they were aware fo her presence around campus and were very willing to answer her,” said Evans. “Many times she carried conversations and searched out the information that she wanted to know, professionally yet making the student feel at ease.” bulletin board SATURDAY was a traumatic period for the Corps, but we were seeing change even then and that is what our cadets are seeing now.” Parsons continued, “You have to have change. What must be done is to change those things which are bad and build on those things which are good. I don’t think everything in the corps is good—nor do they.” Parsons spoke of the different organizations within the Corps. “I think the continued support of the various activities in the Corps program by the members of the Corps itself have been important because again that helps to devel op people for whatever future pursuit they have,” said Parsons, “I speak here of organizations like the Ross Volunteers, the Fish Drill Team, rifle teams, and the Cavalry platoon—things of this nature. It gives everyone that ‘something extra’ we keep talk ing about in coming to A&M.” “The things that the Corps does are a little difficult to measure, but I still believe myself that the Corps adds a ‘flavor’ to Texas A&M that makes it what we know it as. In other words,” said Par sons, “a school with high stan dards of not only academics, but of conduct of the student body as a whole in terms of love of coun try, state and flag. I think they add this stability to the univer sity.” Parsons then set his sights on the future. “I hope I can forsee an enrollment increase which is certainly what we think we an ticipate for next year,” Parsons said. “Also with the inclusion of young ladies in the program, we will have problems there to work out jointly, but they will be in Variety show The door-to-door solicitor of charitable donations is now trying to give people something for their money. The March of Dimes of Brazos County are preparing a variety show “fads of the 20th Century” musical—to bring in funds. “Ev eryone interested in starring in the show or helping backstage THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1974 are welcomed,” said Glenda Chan ey, March of Dimes member. “There is room for creative writ ers, musicians, carpenters, and di rectors.” Interested people are to attend Page 3 the cast and activity call, Monday at 7 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, East 25th Street, Bryan.
