Page 6 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1974 SMU holds off Aggies BATTALION CLASSIFIED Terrell paces Mustangs 9 70-68 victory By TED BORISKIE Assistant Sports Editor The everpresent Ira Terrell and hot shooting John Sagehorn guided the SMU Mustangs to a 70-68 win over the Texas Aggies Tuesday night in Dallas’ Moody Coliseum. Terrell ended the game with 15 points and 12 rebounds and blocked numerous shots while Sagehorn scored 14 points, most of them coming from 20 feet or more away. The Mustangs are the hottest team in the conference, winning three straight from the league’s three top ballclubs. A week ago on the same court, SMU handed Texas Tech its first conference loss of the season in a 73-71 squeaker and then traveled to Austin Saturday to defeat the Texas Longhorns, 74-72, on their home court. The win over A&M marks the third straight win by two points, all in the same general scoring area. A seesaw battle throughout, SMU never led by more than seven, with that stretch, 49-42, coming early in the second half. Although never able to pull away, the Mustangs led for practically the entire contest with A&M’s only dominance being of short duration and coming towards the end of the game. But senior Pony guard Zack Thiel hit two crucial baskets to put SMU back on top to stay. Thiel had a chance to put the game out of reach but missed the first shot of a one-and-one with 18 seconds remaining with SMU holding a 70-68 lead. Unable to get the ball inside, the Aggies fed the ball to Randy Knowles who took a 20-foot jumper that bounded off the rim. Getting his own rebound, Knowles took a second shot from just a few feet away but with the mob scene under the basket was unable to make good on the follow up. SMU’s 6-10 Jeff Cummings grabbed the re bound, his only one for the night, and hugged onto the ball as time ran out. Feeling that Knowles may have been fouled amid all the contact surrounding his final shot, the entire Aggie bench filed out onto the court to protest the no-call, leaving the game’s end a very crowded and confused court and referee Shorty Lawson an irked and unhappy man. “They gave us the outside shot,” said coach Shelby Metcalf of the game’s final seconds, “and I’d just as soon Randy (Knowles) took it as any one. Overall I can’t fault our gpys’ play.” Terrell was six of seven from the field and three for three from the line and seemed un stoppable as he proved to be a thorn in the Aggies’ side all night long. Knowles was the leading scorer for the Aggies with 17 points while Jerry Mercer contributed 15 and John Thornton and Cedric Joseph pumped in 12 each. Mercer was the game’s leading rebounder with 16 while Joseph had 12 and Thornton pulled in eight. The Aggies shot 44.8 percent from the field arid 80 percent from the free throw line while the Mustangs had a 47.8 field goal percentage and hit 50 percent from the line. Perhaps symbolic of SMU’s inability to pull away from the Aggies was the action that occurred at the end of the first half. Thornton fouled SMU forward Jimmy Murphy with five seconds left. Murphy sank both ends of the one-and-one and the Aggies used up four seconds getting the ball to midcourt. Knowles took a desperation shot from 50 feet away and, to the amazement of every one but himself, the ball swished through the bucket as the buzzer sounded.
