PEANUTS
of trucker shutdown
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
One driver was killed and
scattered violence was reported
Thursday as a shutdown by inde
pendent truckers spread across
Eastern and Appalachian states,
and then moved west. Several in
dustries were threatened with
layoffs.
In Pittsburg, Pennsylvania Gov.
Milton Shapp emerged from a
meeting with truckers’ represen
tatives convinced the strike will
spread and continue. Lt. Gov. Er
nest Kline said Shapp would ac

morning to keep peace on the
state’s highways.
The independents, who are pro
testing high fuel prices and low
freight rates, “made it clear that
they will have their shutdown,”
Kline said of the meeting which
included a group claiming to rep
resent 100,000 independent driv
ers.
Other truckers’ spokesmen also
urged a nationwide shutdown of
independent drivers, and they said
many other drivers were expected
to pull their rigs off the roads
at midnight Thursday.
Some scattered gatherings of
independent drivers were re
ported in the Southwest, and a
large truck terminal in Eos An
geles was reported closed Thurs
day night by protesting drivers.
But the shutdown appeared
strongest in Ohio and Pennsyl
vania, with some activity also re
ported in West Virginia, Indiana,
North Carolina, New Jersey and
Connecticut. In several states, pa
trol cars escorted truckers who
wanted to keep their cargoes mov
ing-
Officials in Washington said
they were worried that a con
tinued stoppage would have eco
nomic impact, and some of that
impact appeared about ready to
hit.
A dozen major Appalachian
mines were said to be on the verge
of shutting down because key
materials were not being deliv
ered.
In Ohio, Youngstown Sheet &
Tube said it will temporarily sus
pend production of first rolled
steel products on Monday because
it could not ship its products.
About 1,000 workers could be af
fected.
A spokesman for Bethlehem
Steel Co. said the stoppage had
caused a virtual standstill in
movement of products from the
company’s Bethlehem, Pa., plant.
He said a meeting would be held
Friday to discuss a possible lay
off. The plant employs 14,000 peo
ple.
Violent incidents were report
ed in several states, but they did
not appear as bad as on some re
cent days, except for the death.
That occurred near Allentown,
Pa., where police said a rock
slammed through the windshield
of a moving truck, killing the
driver, Ronald Hengst, 33, of
Spring Grove, Pa. Police said
it was a murder, and stated they
were seeking four men, believed
to be truckers.
The Pittsburgh meeting called
by Shapp was designed to try and
convince the independent truck
ers to stop their shutdown and
accept federal offers of belief.
