Billy Jack 9 —an exposition

By BRAD ELLIS
“Billy Jack,” directed by T. C.
Frank, starring Tom Laughlin and
Delores Taylor is as excellently
constructed as fine expository
writing.
Although this movie is as vio
lent and hip as the motorcycle ex
ploitation movies and their kind,
this film is a thoroughly honest
illustration of non-violent reac
tions to hate and prejudice, con
trasted with a very physically vio
lent libertarian reaction.
This is the story of Billy Jack
(Laughlin), who is a half-breed
American Indian, very concious
of his ancestry, a former Green
Beret and karate expert; very sin
cerely devoted to Indian customs
and ceremonies. His personal bat
tle with the local extra-legal pow
er structure involves the children
of the Freedom School for prob
lem children and reservation In
dians, and Jean (Ms. Taylor), the
school’s director. The non-violent
people at the school struggle to
avoid trouble, but seem always
to fail tragically.
The cinematography easily re
veals the careful, exquisite struc
ture of this movie. Care and artis
try produced the smooth, pictures
que opening sequence of the mus
tang round-up; a well-paced blend
of telephoto, horseback and heli
copter-aerial photography com
bined with strong music. The same
artistry was applied to planning
the story and evoking the sin
cere and honest acting from the
entire cast. The characterizations

a little grainy, a detail which
either conveys a fairyland effect
or reveals the use of a more
photosensitive film to cut down
on additional lighting on the lo
cation. All these things tend to
give the superficial impression
that the movie was quickly, cheap
ly and possibly lightly conceived;
light to be dismissed. Not so. This
movie is just extraordinarily stru
ctured, honest, tasteful and shock
ing; straightforwardly and un-
complicatedly so.
“Billy Jack” has been advertis
ed as an enormously popular mov
ie, and is so because it does not
fool around with tricks trying to
be subtle. It has a valid message
and communicates it directly to
people in the peoples’ terms. The
specific problem may or may not
still be occurring in America to
day, but the spirit underneath the
situation probably still exists.
The movie is so effective it is
the one of which all the others on
this topic are lesser imitations.
“Billy Jack” began a seven night
roadshow engagement at the Pal
ace Theater in Bryan Wednesday
night.
