A poll released by the Texas Chapter of Common Cause showed that of 370 “usable answers” in a statewide telephone survey, 46 per cent said they had been fol lowing news of the convention in the newspapers or on radio-TV. Another 20 per cent said they had kept up with the convention some but “not much.” Several delegates said they doubt the interest was that high. As the convention entered its third week, the president, House Speaker Price Daniel Jr., said the full convention may consider the Bill of Rights next week—making it the first proposal to be debated by all the delegates. In testimony before the execu tive committee, State Agriculture Commissioner John White sup ported public election of agency heads such as himself. The ultimate outcome of an appointive system, White said, is “machine politics — a process which has been dying out in this country for half a century. Why should we revive it in Texas?” Dallas Mayor Wes Wise urged the finance committee to leave in the new constitution a require ment that property taxes be “equal and uniform.” BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day 5? per word 4c per word each additional day Minimum charge—76c M Classified Display 11.00 per column inch each insertion DEADLINE 3 p.m. day before publication udent FOR RENT irit tv(_ Ices.’ 1 Two bedroom furnished house, corner lot.
