TAMU becomes focal point
(Continued from page 1)
Bryant notes that pollen dispersed
by seed-bearing plants is immune
to human gastic acids. “The hu
man digestive system doesn’t
touch them,” he said.
Thus, pollen eaten by man is
excreted and can form a perma
nent locked-in record of diet. Hu
man feces in the form of copro-
lites have become extremely im
portant in archeological re
search.
Whether the pollen comes from
coprolites or soil samples is im
material to analysis. By deter
mining what plants the pollen
came from, the palynologist has
a “clock” to past geologic time,
distribution of plant life and, in
the case of coprolites, a key for
working on migration patterns of
early man.
Bryant’s study of the Boriack
Bog near Lexington reveals the
Lee County area west of Bryan
was not always a post oak sav
annah. It was part of a deciduous
forest about 15,000 years ago,
with alder, maple, birch and
spruce among other trees. He said
it is one of the best preserved
bogs in Texas.
Besides the Peru research, Bry
ant has analyzed material from
a Neolithic farm on Cyprus, Ne
anderthal coprolites from Laza
ret, France; an early Israeli farm
ing community and has been con
tacted by University of Chicago
Mid-East archeologist Robert
Braidwood who believes he has
found one of the world’s earliest
agriculture sites in Turkey.
Extensive specialized training
and study is required to become
an anthropological palynologist,
Bryant said. One of only three
scientists in the U. S. trained to
use the tool, he has contempora
ries at Arizona State and Wash
ington State Universities.
Bryant say there is more than
enough work around for the trio.
What is needed for someone
entering the field, he thinks, is
primary specialization in both
botany and anthropology, from
which ethnobotany derives. “A
botanist is usually not equipped
to ask an archeologist the right
questions,” he said. “They must
be able to communicate properly.”
The science of palynology was
developed in the early 1900s. Dr.
Eric Callen perfected the tech
nique of human coprolite analysis
at McGill University in Canada
during the late 1950s and early
1960s. He died while working in
Peru in 1970. Callen’s coprolitie
reference materials were given
to the TAMU lab. Bryant calls
the Callen collection the “finest
of its kind in North America and
probably the world.”
Another specialist adding to
TAMU’s anthropology program is
Dr. Harry Shafer, who teaches
the state’s only regularly-offered
course on Indians of Texas. Sha
fer workked on the Texas Arch
eological Salvage Project of the
Texas Park Service eight years,
“digging up the whole state of
Texas,” Bryant said, before ac
quiring his degrees. “Harry
knows all the archeologists in
Texas on a first name basis,” Bry
ant added, “and knows as much
about Texas acheology as anyone
else in the field.”
Shafer is a specialist in lithic
technology, capable of classfy-
ing arrowheads and points not
only by their shape but by meth
ods of hand manufacture.
Shafer opened with TAMU stu
dents in anthropology TAMU’s
first excavation. It is located on
an artifact-laden Indian camp
site near the Brazso River, on
property owned by Tony Varisco.
Shafer has also had overseas
archeological work, at the Tabun
Homo erectus site in Israel.
Bryant described one practical
aspect of the work, apart from
discovering how man’s ancestors
evolved, adapted and survived.
“If the worst comes,” Bryant
commented on the current eco
nomic situation, “I know I can
take my family to West Texas
and live off the land. My research
has shown the staple of early
man’s diet there was agave and
cactus pads he threw in the fire
to singe off spines, sliced up and
boiled in water. He survived on
it.”
Texas A&M University carefully sift soil from a dig for artifacts at an old Indian camp
site on the Brazos River. Under the guidance of Dr. Harry Shafer, they are getting their
hands dirty in one of the practical aspects of anthropology. Several stone implements
were found on the Tony Varisco farm site in Brazos County.
The Exorcist’
a hit in Dallas
DALLAS (AP) — An Inter-
state-ABC Theaters spokesman
said Tuesday the film “The Ex
orcist” showing here already has
set a one-week, all-time attend
ance record in Dallas but not
without its side effects.
“I don’t think any picture has
affected people so emotionally
like this one has,” said Francis
Barr.
Barr said a number of people
have fainted while watching the
feature while others have left
vomiting.
Long lines have formed around
the Wilshire Theater in sub
freezing temperatures since the
movie openend.
Episcopal Canon Courtland
Moore said the Dallas Diocese has
received numerous requests for
rites of exorcisim, upon which the
movie is based, since the film
opened in Dallas.
