Student Orchestra Tish and Sam Self have com mon interests that might be the envy of other husbands and wives. The graduate students like to fish and travel. But there hasn’t been much time for either lately. Both will be awarded the Ph.D. at commencement Dec. 15 at Texas A&M. They even defended their dis sertations for the doctorate de gree on the same day. That means Tish and Sam suffered their pre defense tension together, not to mention the extensive research, analysis and writing that went into the dissertations. Now that’s all behind them and the husband-wife team that has contributed to Texas A&M as faculty-staff members is looking forward to fulltime work in edu cation. The Selfs will climax more than 14 years work and preparation toward that goal at fall semester commencement. “I’ll probably get the Ph.D. first,” Mrs. Self smiled mischiev ously at her husband. “Patricia comes before Samuel alphabet ically.” “Not if they go by Tish,” he rejoined. That’s how most know the counselor in the Dean of Women’s office. She has worked with coeds since starting work for the doctorate in educational psychology in 1968. Sam Self, who once partici pated in missile trajectory re search at the White Sands range, is a candidate for the Ph.D. in educational curriculum and in struction. He was a research assistant two years at the Cyclo tron Institute. Now a research assistant in the Curiculum and Instruction De partment, Sam was with Cyclo tron Institute two years in a similar capacity and edited Geo- News for the College of Geo sciences. “The key to our success is one another,” he confided. Both credited their committee chair men. Supervising Tish Self’s doctoral work was Dr. Robert R. Reilley of the Educational Psy chology Department. C&I De partment Head Dr. Glenn John son chaired Sam’s committee. A couple of pieces of furniture also played key roles in getting the Selfs onto the G. Rollie White Coliseum stage Saturday week. “Mine was a $4.95 piece of junk, an old table I’m thinking of having bronzed,” Tish joked. Covered with contact paper, it provided ample space for research materials to be spread out and kept close at hand. “Mine was a birthday present I really didn’t want,” Sam re marked. “Tish gave it to me and I thought it was the last thing I needed at t he time. I went through three degrees on it.” The Selfs earned their first two degrees at UT-E1 Paso, where they met at a fraternity party and married their sophomore year. He was formerly from Gads den, Alabama, and she grew up in Holyoke, Mass. The first movie they saw was “Gone W? the Wind.” “Sam kept nudging me and si ing, ‘See, see, that’s the waj was’,” Tish recalled. They plan to go on into ten ing and research. Mrs. $tj wants to stay in student pars nel services, with emphasis counseling. With his backgroi in physics, Sam plans on wort toward improving teaching ] cedures of college physics. After Saturday though, t want to travel some “if wem get some gasoline.” They ilj have a favorite spot near port to “just relax with somet«! and a couple of old rusty fii poles.” BATTALION CLASSIFIED FOR SALE FOR RENT HELP WANTED WANTED Lloyd’s AM-PM, 8-track stereo; air Room in boarding house has a few men Secretary needed, must be able to type One roommate wanted to share ll» suspension speakers. 845-4183. 32942 vacancies. 823-0266. 329t3 well, have excellent spelling, be familiar bedroom apartment.
