Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 19T3 BAIT PICKS Guest Picker: Griff Lasley, Head Yell Leader Graduation Loss Light Only Seven Leave Ags There are seven seniors listed on A&M’s 1973 football roster but it’s rarely that more than four ever see any game action. When the Texas Longhorns roll in tomorrow for the Thanks giving battle with the Aggies at Kyle Field, it’ll be the final col legiate appearance for the A&M seniors. Safety Larry Ellis, the squad’s only senior letterman and the only two-year letterman, likely will be the only starter. Two others have started this year. Offensive right guard Bud Trammell, who has had injury problems all during his career, has started some but he reinjured a knee against Rice and may not even suit up this week. Offen sive tackle Mike Bruton started against SMU and plays on spe cialty teams. Quarterback Tim Trimmier, who is the messenger on offensive plays, also is the holder for extra points and field goal attempts. Center Darrell Taliaferro is the center on punts and placement tries. Robert Den nis is a reserve linebacker who has not played much and halfback Bob Jennings broke a wrist early in the fall and has not played. It’s the smallest senior group, considering starters and playing personnel, that A&M has had in many years, maybe ever. Ellis was not even recruited. He came out on his own in the spring of his sophomore year and won a letter the following fall and then became a starter last season. He’s from Troup, Tex. Trammell came out of Dumas as a fine prospect and was a starting defensive tackle early in his sophomore year but was in jured against Nebraska and did not fully recover until this sea son. Then, he was hurt again and freshman Billy Lemons moved into his spot. Taliaferro, from Arp, has be come a specialty center and has been a good one on long snaps but has not played much other wise during his Aggie career. Bruton, from Nacogdoches, had one really big moment in his Ag gie career. It came last season in Dallas against SMU. The Aggies had scored late to go ahead, 20- 17. Then, as SMU was about to launch a desperation passing at tack, Bruton, playing defensive end, crashed through to cause QB Keith Bobo to fumble and A&M recovered on the SMU 3 and drove in to score and win, 27-17. Trimmier, a journeyman QB during his Aggie career, finally hit paydirt this season against SMU late in the game when he took the Aggies in for a TD, toss ing a 19-yard scoring pass to freshman Robert Verde. Now comes Thanksgiving and the finale for the seniors. Ags Face Challenge In Texas’ Wyman Ruggers Take 2 More Wins The A&M Rugby team chal lenged two New Orleans rugby clubs, Tulane and Crescent City, in play last weekend. A&M took Tulane, 29-15. Play ing a faster game, the Ags were never less than six points ahead. High scorer was Patrick Fondreau with nine points followed by Randy Hurju with eight, David Eslinger, Tom Charney and Don Barr with four apiece. It was Fondreau with 17 points to win the day as the Ags beat one of Louisiana’s finest teams, Crescent City, 21-9. A&M con trolled the game from the start, leading by 18 points at the half. The only score made in the second half was by Fondreau. The second team also beat Tu lane, 16-6, led by fly-half David Hunt. In its second game, the Ags had a combined Tulane- Crescent City team tied, 3-3. FOR BEST RESULTS TRY BATTALION CLASSIFIED You often think of Bill Wyman as a quiet guy, but those who know him tell you he makes a loud, clear noise in his own way. The recipient of a good portion of Wyman’s talk are the Long horns who form the attack teams to demonstrate the opponent of the week’s defense. In practice, they saw, Bill Wyman speaks. On the field on Saturdays his deeds do most of the talking. Wyman, a senior from Spring Branch is praised by Texas coach es as the best center in recent Longhorn history, and maybe ever. “He’s playing as well as any lineman we have ever had,” says coach Willie Zapalac who has tu tored great lines in the Southwest Conference for 25 years. Assistant coach Spikes Dykes, who started working with the of fensive linemen along with Zap alac and Leon Manley this year, is in charge of working the re serves against the first and sec ond units in practice each week. “He’s really something,” Dykes marvels: “He goes all out on ev ery play, in a game or in practice. I guess all of the great ones do that, but Bill is special. In work ing against the opponent’s de fensive plan, he’s always aware of the work the attack team guys are doing for us, and he tells them about it. He wants them to do a good job,” Dykes said. Besides the job Wyman does week after week in working on the opponent noseguard—whoever he may be, his value to the Texas offense is greatly increased be cause of his individual talent—he turns other people loose to do other work. “In the Wishbone,” Dykes ex plains, “when our center is good enough to block their noseguard one-on-one, it frees a man in the line and gives us an extra blocker that other people often don’t have.” Wyman, who serves alone with Glen Gaspard as co-captain of the 1973 Longhorns, obviously is a strong all-everything candidate. “Probably his greatest single attribute is pride,” said Dykes. “Pride and dedication. It is all business with him. He is constant ly trying to improve, to do the best he can.” As people who have faced him will agree, that is awfully awfully good. Bill Wyman AGGIE MUMS!
