The man at the controls in the Aggies 35-16 victory over TCU last Saturday was David Walker, a 17-year-old freshman from Sul phur, La. The poise Walker exhibited in his collegiate debut as a starter belied the fact that he was the only non-legal adult in the lineup under the new Texas Majority Rights Law which extended the privilges of adulthood to every one 18 years of age and older. Walker ran 19 times for 81 yards, hit one of two passes with out an interception and engi neered five touchdown drives. Following the game, he faced a barrage of newsmen and showed the same kind of composure. “No, I wasn’t nervous during the game," Walker said. “I treated it just like practice. I got a tooth knocked out in the third quarter, but it was worth it because we got a first down. Everyone on the team was very encouraging. Mike Jay (the quarterback Walker replaced) helped a lot during the week and on the side lines. I expected to throw about 20 times, but we didn’t need to throw. The coach called the plays and everything worked out fine.” “I thought David did a very fine job,” Aggie coach Emory Bellard said after the game. “I was extremely pleased at the way he handled himself and the way he ran the team.” Contrary to the usual turn of events in recruiting a highly sought athlete, it was Walker who made the final approach to A&M rather than vice-versa “I signed a conference letter with LSU,” Walker said, “but I de cided I wanted a chance to play earlier. So I called coach Bellard and told him I wanted to come to A&M. LSU was very nice about it and didn’t put any pressure on me at all. I certainly don’t re gret my decision. Everything has worked out fine.” team to the state title last year. The 6-0, 184-pound lefthander is an accomplished passer as well as a good runner. During Walker’s time in the TCU game, the Aggies did not have a turnover, quite a turn about from the last three games when A&M had 15 turnovers to just two for the opposition. FLORSH PORTC CC 113 N M Dowi Walker was named the Offen sive Player of the Year in Louisi ana after taking his high school Guiding an offensive unit which is composed of one junior, eight sophomores and two fresh men, Walker’s youth is not really extraordinary. If he and his young compadres can stay healthy, Aggie football fortunes are definitely on the way up.
