Committees Discuss ‘Tragedy’
By STEVE GOBLE
Mary and Beth will never be
friends. They have classes togther,
are in the same major, and have
lots of things in common.
They aren’t going to be friends,
however. Mary is black; Beth is
white.
This American Tragedy is one
aspect of black-white male-female
relailonships discvussed Wednes
day night by a Black Awareness
Committee panel visiting Wo
men’s Awareness Workshop meet
ing.
“I don’t think I would try to
be close friends with a white. You
never know when they’re for
real,” said panelist Lynda House.
“It’s hard to get the white
woman off the level of trying
to put something over on some
one,” added panelist Helen Wil-
born. “They invite you over to
their place, but it seems they
never want to come over to your
place—some excuse always comes
up. Something’s wrong here.”
“It’s a form of tokenism not of
real friendship,” Ms. House said.
The stumbling block of black-
white friendship—mutual trust—
is a two-way problem, according
to panelist Marvin Bridges.
“Sure it comes from both sides
.... I wouldn’t want to leave
myself open like that to an Anglo-
perhaps in another time, another
place—but not here, not this soci-
ely,” he said.

‘Energy Crisis’
Political Forum will present,
Texas Sen. Walter Mengden Fri
day to discuss the energy crisis.
Sen. Mengden’s address, the
first of a two-part series will be
at 12 noon in Rooms 225 and 226
of the Memorial Student Center.
The second part on the energy
situation, at the national level,
will feature former Secretary of
the Interior Stewart Udall in a
Nov. 15 presentation, said Politi
cal Forum Chairman Ed Jarrett.
“Texas and its oil industry will
have a significant role in the al
leviation or solution of the energy
crisis,” Jarrett noted.
Sen. Mengden represents the
13th District in the Texas Sen
ate. The Houston solon is con
sidered a reform-minded legisla
tor. He has served on the Nation
al Resources, Jurisprudence and

During the 63rd legislature,
Mengden introduced or supported
73 bills and resolutions to reverse
socialistic trends in the state, and
pollution, lower the crime rate
and resolve the energy and re
source crises, Jarrett reported.
A question-answer session is a
traditional part of Political For
um programs.

“Do more things together,” Ms.
Wilborn urged members of the
black and women’s liberation
groups “Be for real. Don’t put on
airs.”
The predominately female panel
also discussed sexual discrimina
tion.
“I feel like I’m put on a pedes
tal,” said Ms. Wilborn. “There’s
so few black women here . . . . ”
“Women are discriminated
against the moment they wait for
a man to open the door for them,”
Bridges said.
“It’s not the fault of blacks or
whites—it’s everybody’s fault this
country is messed up,” said Ms.
Wilborn. Racial and sexual dis
criminations are just part of the
problem, she added.
