GENERAL ELECTRIC THE BATTALION Tuesday, October 16, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 3 Famed Pair Elude Die-Hard Reporters By TED BORISKIE Sonny and Cher! In the past eijght years those names have spelled both magic and mud. Pres ently, however, they spell magic and the two magicians themselves were coming to G. Rollie White Coliseum on the sprawling cam pus of A&M. It was to be their only stop in the entire Southwest. It was sure to be quite an event. At two o’clock Sunday after noon Sonny and Cher were the far thest things from my mind. The preceding week I had tried a couple of half-hearted attempts to arrange an interview and was met with extreme indifference. I had tickets to see them perform that night but the concert was no mat ter of major concern to me. It was a great time for Julia Jones, fine arts writer for The /Battalion, to call me on the phone. “Do you still want that inter view with Sonny and Cher ? ” I told her I wasn’t able to set one up. “I think they’re at G Rollie set ting up for the concert.” “No?” “Right now. We might get in to talk with them if we hurry.” There was already a line form ing at G Rollie so I walked and asked the guy sitting by the door how long he’d been there. “Since one.” “Do you really like them that much to sit here for six hours?” “No, my mother does.” The other nine were waiting for themselves. They were the faithful. Waiting in line.” Dedica tion to a Cause.” We arrived at the back of G. Rollie and walked to the stage area encountering no opposition. We saw an official looking person sitting at a desk. He was check ing IDs for students and faculty wishing to use the gyms. “Do you know if Sonny and Cher are here yet?” we asked him. “Naw, but I know what motel they’re staying at.” “Really! Which one?” “The Holiday Inn in College Station.” A flash of momentary suspi cion. “How do you know? “That’s what they said.” The lady at the Holiday Inn desk was busy and kept us wait ing for a few minutes. Finally she walked over to us. “Could you tell us what room Sonny and Cher are in?” “They’re not staying here.” “We have reliable information that they are.” “They came this morning and canceled their reservation because we didn’t have the type of accom modations they were looking for. “Do you know where they are staying ? ” “I do but I’m not allowed to tell.” There were only two other mo tels in town where they could 1 pos sibly be staying — The Ramada Inn and the Holiday Inn in Bry an. We checked the Ramada Inn first. “Could you tell us what room Sonny and Cher are in?” “They’re not staying here.” “We have reliable information that they are.” “I wish they were but they’re not.” Walking back to the car I said to Julia, “She’s lying.” “She is! How can you tell?” “She laughed too much while she was talking to us. It looked like she was laughing to cover up some nervousness.” “What should we do, just knock on doors until we find them?” “You can get arrested for that. Let’s go check out the Holiday Inn just in case.” We drove around the Holiday Inn parking lot when suddenly, Wham!, we spotted it; a beauti ful, snow white Cadillac limou sine. “It’s gotta be theirs,” cried Julia. “No, I think the girl at the Ramada was lying.” “Let’s go ask at the desk.” “They’ll just lie to us.” “There’s a maid. Let’s ask her.” Julia went into the room the maid was cleaning and came out in about 30 seconds. “They’re staying in Room 215, overlooking the pool.” The Ramada girl was telling the truth! Sherlock Holmes has nothing to worry about. We decided against knocking on their door since we did not wish to antagonize them by barging I SOSOLIK S I TV & RADIO SERVICE Zenith - Color & B&W - TV | All Makes B&W TV Repairs I 713 S. MAIN 822-2133 | into their private life. We would call them on the phone to arrange an interview but first we would have to get the phone number which meant a trip to another front desk. There were three women behind the desk. “Could you tell us what room Sonny and Cher are in?” “They’re not staying here.” “We have reliable information that they’re in Room 215 with a wonderful view of the pool.” That struck home. They stood nervously glancing at each other and us. “Could you give us their phone number ?” More silence and more nervous glances. “Could you give us the number of their manager or their PR man?” Finally one said “Their man ager is Mr. Ridgeway. His num ber is 242.” Number 242 was answered by a small child. “Could I speak to Mr. Ridge way ? ” “He’s already gone to rehear sal.” We rushed back to G. Rollie to find the band playing full swing. We asked a policeman if he could point out Mr. Ridgeway to us. He directed us to a member of the Town Hall organization who im mediately recognized me as a re porter for The Battalion. “What are you doing here?” “We’re trying to get an inter view with Sonny and Cher. We’re looking for Mr. Ridgeway.” “Who authorized you?” “No one authorized us. We’re members of the working press and . . .” “We’ll do what we can. Just leave us alone right now and we’ll call you if we find any thing.” We were escorted to the door by the policeman. It was time to go knocking on doors. Back at the Holiday Inn we found that Room 215 did not face the pool. We located our maid and found she was not really sure of the room number. She recom mended we find another m^id who might know more about it. We found a group of maids who knew but were not talking. While haggling with the maids a kid in a blue T-shirt walked by and solved our problems by telling us that Sonny and Cher had rented rooms 232-240, all of which over looked the pool. “How do you know,” we asked him. “I listened in on a phone con versation.” Bless all eavesdroppers. We walked along the row of doors and heard noises in Room 240. We knocked on the door. The noises stopped. We waited. We knocked again. It became ob vious we were not going to get an answer. The kid in the blue T- shirt was calling us. “I found their chauffeur.” We talked to him for a while and scrawled a note that said something like “Could we see you for about 10 minutes?” He prom ised to give it to them. We made it back to The Bat talion office to pick up a press pass and found a note taped to the door. “Go to G. Rollie imme diately. Mr. Ridgeway tried to contact you.” Rushing to G. Rollie we heard a Sonny and Cher song on the radio. It was about 4:30 and there were a couple hundred people TUESDAY SAN ANTONIO HOMETOWN CLUB will meet at 7:45 p. m. in Room 146 of the Physics Building to discuss plans for the Thanksgiving party. When we got backstage a man came to us and asked “Are you the reporters?” “Yes.” He pointed to a man sitting in a corner eating from a bucket of fried chicken and watching Dallas and Los Angeles play foot ball. “That’s Mr. Ridgeway, he’s the road manager. He’ll tell you all about living on the road and anything you want to know about Sonny and Cher. It’ll make a real good story.” “But we want to talk to them.” “This is the road manager. He’ll tell you everything you want to know. It’ll make a real good story.” Mr. Ridgeway was not interest ed in us. We were coming in a distant third to Colonel Sanders and the Los Angeles Rams. We tried a few polite questions. “What are they really like?” “Uh . . . they’re like normal people.” Of course they’re like normal people. What did we expect him to say, that they’re lucky to be rich or else they’d be put away. “This is their only stop in the Southwest. Why did they pick A&M?” “Uh . . . money.” Money! Why money! Why couldn’t they come here because of the band or the drill team or because they watched the Cotton Bowl in 1968. Whey did they have to come because of money? We thanked him for his trouble and left. Maybe they would get our note and grace us with 10 precious minutes. Yeah, maybe. It was raining harder and the line was getting longer. The ra dio was playing another Sonny and Cher song. At the concert that night I was seated at best a half a mile away from the stage. The crowd was abuzz with excitement. A man stepped up to the microphone and announced “Ladies and gentle men, Sonny and Cher!!!” The crowd went crazy. I could barely see them. For all I knew it could have been Sully and Shep on stage. It was then I realized: the two people, Mr. and Mrs. Bono, with whom I had tried to get in touch, were grossly unimportant. Sonny and Cher, the myth, was important. Many people who go to art galleries do not go to see the paintings, merely to see the sig natures. We had been chasing the painting all day and now the signature was right in front of us. And that’s what it’s all about. Isn’t it? Roloff Homes Face Closing AUSTIN (A>)_Welfare Com missioner Raymond Vowell said today he would ask the state at torney general to take action to close two unlicensed children’s homes operated by evangelist Lester Roloff. Vowell also told a news confer ence he “could not be more pleased” if Roloff should come in and seek licenses for his Rebekah Home for Girls in Corpus Christi and Anchor Home for Boys in Zapata. Roloff, meanwhile, planned a rally here today to protest the state’s refusal to let him operate his homes without a license.
