By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
State
AUSTIN — Gov. Dolph Briscoe
will not issue a statement on his
policy on paroles for marijuana
offenders until after a decision
has been made on a rehearing in
the Frank Demolli case, a spokes
man said Thursday.
Briscoe earlier said he would
order a review of the records of
penitentiary inmates convicted
under the old marijuana law.
A 1973 drug law softened the
penalties for marijuana offenders
and also provided that those con
victed under the old law could
petition the courts for resentenc
ing under the new law.
The Texas Court of Criminal
Appeals ruled unanimously Wed
nesday in the Demolli case that
the resentencing provision was
unconstitutional. That usurps the
governor’s powers of pardon and
parole, the court said.
SAN ANTONIO — The resig
nation and probated sentence of
Vice President Spiro Agnew was
a “put up deal”, charges U. S.
Rep. Henry Gonzalez, a regional
Democratic whip from Texas.
Gonzalez said Atty. Gen. Elli
ott Richardson should be forced
to resign.
Gonzalez said Agnew had only
recently asked the House to give
(him a hearing, a request the
House did not act upon, and Wed-
Jnesday’s events p o i! n t to “a
quickie deal.”
“It prostitutes further the al
ready prostituted Justice Depart
ment,” said Gonzalez, who argued
no one else would receive such
privileged treatment.
National
WASHINGTON — Sen George
McGovern’s former political di-
irector testified Thursday that
Nixon campaign dirty tricks con
tributed to the Democratic par
ty’s 1972 wounds.
Frank Mankiewicz said the pur
pose of the sabotage seemed to be
to “create within the Democratic
party such a strong sense of re
sentment among the candidates
and their followers as to make
unity of the party impossible once
a nominee was selected.”
“At that, the effort seems to
have been most successful,” he
said in a prepared opening state
ment to the Senate Watergate
committee.

6 Toma’ a Good Bet
By JULIA JONES
The owner of the Campus The
ater was so dissatisfied with the
thumbs down review of “The
Mackintosh Man” that he has re
voked my theater pass. Not wish
ing to be revengeful against Bill
Shulman, I am going to write
about the new television show
“Toma,” in particular.
This is the story of a “cop” in

New York. An individualist, Toma
wears jeans and sweat shirts to
work, and rarely checks in with
his boss.
Of course, TV is full of police
shows, but this one seemed gen
uinely different. For one thing,
it was filmed on location. This is
unusual as most police shows are
filmed and script located in L. A.
They do this to save money, but
at the cost to the viewer. Even
a large city like L.A. can get
boring when it is used as often
as it has been in the past. The
character actors are a refreshing
change.
Many weekly police series tend
to use the same people or the
same personality types too often;
not “Toma.” The people they used
looked really “tough New York”.
In other words, I wouldn’t want
to get mugged by them.
The script was superior to the
usual fare. Our hero was slow
enough to allow the guy he was
with who was pretending to be
someone else, to kill two men un
der his nose. This may not be ex
tremely smart, but it is more real
istic than a show that allows the
hero to catch all the crooks and
save all the people. There ain’t
no such person, baby.
It is hard to tell if the quality
of a weekly series will hold up.
But if you are stuck in the dorm
on a Thursday night, “Toma” is
a good bet to watch.
