Ruggers to Face Kenya

back with the stamina of a lum
berjack and mix equal parts of
gentlemanly sportsmanship and
that fightin’ Texas Aggie spirit?
This combination times 15 gets
you the starting lineup for the
A&M Rugby Club.
The A&M Rugby Club will en
ter into international competition
Thursday when they meet the
professional rugby touring team
from Kenya on Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.
on the drill field.
Rugby is a rough and tumble
sport started in 1823 when Wil
liam Ellis of Rugby College
(hence the name) in England
picked up the ball in a soccer
match and ran with it. This act
gave birth to the development of
the game of rugby.
In many ways rugby is the
most elemental game of all. Each
team attempts to ground the ball
behind the opponent’s goal line,
similarly to the over-zealous way
in which football players place
the ball on the ground after a
touchdown, the opposing team
attempts to stop them by tackling
the man with the ball.
Rugby teams consist of 15
players on a side, eight forwards
and seven backs, the forwards
being larger and more powerful
because their weight is needed in
the scrum.
The scrum or maul, as it was
formerly called, is simply the
eight forwards trying to get the
ball. The forwards are bound to
gether and meet the opposing
team in a shoving match. The
ball is placed in the middle by a
back.
The forwards then try to push
the opponent off the ball, thus
gaining possession and a chance
to move it down the field by short
runs, kicks and passes.
Passes must be lateral or be
hind the passer. It is illegal to
pass the ball forward, lie on the
ball, throw it out of bounds or
hold onto it after being tackled.
Scoring results from a team
crossing the opponent’s goal line
and downing the ball. This is a
“try” worth four points. After
the try a free kick is taken on a
line perpendicular to the place
where the ball was grounded. The
kick is worth two points. The
drop kick is worth three points
and may be scored from any
where on the field.
The club has 70 members and
holds practice every afternoon
from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. New mem
bers are invited. Before you put
on your gym shorts, “T” shirt
and rubber cleats (the only rugby
uniform), remember armor is not
allowed and there are two halves
in regular play with a five-
minute halftime and no substi
tutions.
The Aggie Ruggers will start
six men who have played together
at least three years. The scrum
is “old hat” for Mark Anthony,
Don Barr, John Gunn, Randy
Harju, Donnie Robertson and
Steve Sturman who have a com
bined experience of 23 years.
International competition is noth
ing new to these veterans who
have met top competition in
tournaments such as the Mardi
Gras National 1971, the Lone
Star National 1971 in Houston,
Galveston National 1972-73, and
the Austin Invitational 1971 to
semifinalist in the Invitational
Aspen Ruggerfest 1972 and quar
ter finalist in the Invitational
San Francisco Rugby tournament
1973. All in all, the team has a
combined three-year record of 80
wins to only eight defeats.
Most importantly the A&M
Rugby Club has won the Texas
Rugby Union Championship for
the past three years, which per
manently retires the cup to the
club. The Texas Rugby Union
consists of three divisions, 32
teams in all. Our first 15 is
always among the top 10.
The Ruggers began the new
season with a win over TCU,
20-0.
Aggies Improving,
Need Consistency
Head football coach Emory
Bellard feels his team is “getting
closer and closer to being a real
good football team” following a
28-23 loss to Louisiana State last
Saturday in Baton Rouge.
“The reason we are improving
is the obvious one,” Bellard said
in his weekly press conference
Tuesday. “Our players have a
lot of enthusiasm and some talent.
Our biggest need is consistency
and that only comes from game
experience.
i “The kids played real hard
and I was pleased to see them
take the momentum away from
LSU.”
Bellard rated the LSU team as
comparable to last year’s squad
which finished with a 9-2-1 rec
ord including a 24-17 loss to Ten
nessee in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
“We were as strong as they
were,” said Bellard. “We matched
them down the line in the second
half.”
When asked if LSU was able to
tire the Aggies out with its two-
platoon system Bellard said, “We
were too mentally involved and
burning up with the desire to play.
A team like us doesn’t get as tired
as one who is lazy in the mind.
“We were tired after the game,
sure, but we have a lot of compet
itors on our squad and a com
petitor gets tired after the game
instead of during it.”
Instead of getting the bruising
from LSU that many expected,
the Aggies came out of Baton
Rouge in good physical shape.
Offensive tackle Glenn Bujnoch
suffered a slight foot sprain, de
fensive tackle Warren Trahan
injured a wrist and offensive
tackle Dennis Smelser received
a hip pointer for the total extent
of Aggie injuries.
“In fact,” said Bellard, “we
came out of the game in better
physical shape than when we went
in. I guess you might could call
the game a darn fine conditioning
drill.”
