THE BATTALION
Capone to Lead LSU Defense
Returning All-American
By Ted Boriskie
When the Aggies invade Baton
Rouge Saturday, they will find
the name of the game at LSU is
the same as it has been for as
long as most can remember—de
fense.
Being led by all-America War
ren Capone, the linebacking corps
looks as good or better than any
in the nation. Capone led the
Tigers with 71 tackles last year.
Joining him to the left is Gary
(Champagne, a converted tight
end. To Capone’s right is Bo Har
ris who was named to last year’s
all-Southeastern Conference soph
omore team.
The front four has end Binks
Micciotto as the only senior on
the line. Junior Ron Daily holds
down the other end. Sophomores
Steve Cassidy and Rock Raiford
fill in at the tackles. Cassidy
made the all-SEC sophomore team
as a freshman last year.
The Tigers return plenty of ex
perience in the secondary. Cor-
jnerback Mike Williams is yet
another member of the all-SEC
sophomore team last year and is
joined by junior Jimmy Knecht.
Mike Pike and Frank Racine are
the safeties.
The Tigers offense is guided
by Mike Miley who had the un-
envious job of trying to follow
graduated all-America Bert Jones
at quarterback. A high school all-
America, he hit neither of two
passes and was mostly confined
to the specialty teams last year.

Hodgin starts at splitback backed

( Texas A&M welcomed quar
terback Mike Jay to practice
Wednesday, and the tough soph
omore showed little ill effects
from an ankle sprained in A&M’s
48-0 win over Wichita State last
Saturday.
“I’ll definitely be ready to
play,” Jay said after testing the
ankle in a full speed two-hour
practice session. Jay had missed
the Monday and Tuesday drills.
No. 2 quarterback David
Walker, a freshman from Sul
phur, La., also looked sharp.
Kicker Randy Haddox drew ap
plause from his teammates when
he was successful on four 47-yard
field goal attempts and then cap
ped the performance with a good
kick from 52 yards.
The Aggies were in high spirits
as they continued preparation for
their Saturday night battle
against LSU in Baton Rouge.
In the first national statistics
release of the season, the team
and three players ranked among
the leaders. Fullback Alvin Bow
ers was 17th in rushing with his
126-yard performance against
Wichita. Mark Stanley was 11th
in punting with a 43.2 average,
and Skip Walker was tied for sec-

ond in scoring with three touch
downs for 18 points.
The team ranked 11th in total
offense with 463 yards and ninth
in rushing with 361 yards. They
were also 13 th in punting and
tied with six other teams for the
lead in scoring defense.
WACO — The Baylor Bears,
hobbled by injuries received in
last week’s game with the Uni
versity of Oklahoma here, wound
up contact work in preparing for
the Pittsburg Panthers.
Coach Grant Teaff said, “We
looked sharp in our execution,
both offensively and defensively
today.”
Missing the workout were line
backers Don Bockhom and cen
ter Cary Dorman. Both are start
ers.
Bockhorn is definitely out of
Saturday’s game and it was un
likely that Dorman would see
action, Teaff said.
Wingback Brian Kilgore was
off crutches and worked out at
three-quarter speed. Kilgore is
suffering from a sore foot but
is expected to play against the
Panthers.
The Bears “spent a lot of time
on the kicking game,” Teaff said.
Rusty Parrott will be the starting
punter despite an ankle injury
suffered in the OU game.
David Hicks will handle the
kickoffs, extra points and field
goal.
AUSTIN — Coach Darrell Roy
al paced his Longhorns through
a light workout Wednesday as
the University of Texas readied
for a Friday meeting with Mi
ami.
The Texas gridders leave Thurs
day morning and plan a brief
/workout in the Orange Bowl
Thursday afternoon.
Royal pronounced most of his
Longhorns physically fit, noting
linebacker Glen Gaspard remains
below par because of a knee in
jury.
However, Royal reported full
back Roosevelt Leaks had a cast
removed from his broken left
thumb.
Texas coaches concern over the
artificial turf in the Orange Bowl
eased after the .Longhorns con
tacted a shoe bank in Miami and
bought new shoes for the Orange
Bowl turf.
The much publicized Polyturf
has received criticism for its slip
periness when wet, requiring spec
ial shoes for teams playing in the
Orange Bowl.
Texas did not have the shoes
and could not purchase them be
cause of a strike at the Canadian
manufacturer’s plant.

the 100, 200 and 440-yard dashes
with times of 9.4, 20.5 and 45.6,
respectively.
Tailback Brad Davis, another
member of last year’s all-SEC
sophomore team, ran for 560
yards for a 4.9 average last sea
son. Ken Addy is the fullback with
a 134-yard, 4.3 average season
last year.
At split end is Bert Jones’
younger brother, Ben, who scored
both touchdowns against Colorado
last week. Returning at tight end
is yet another member of last
year’s all-SEC sophomore team,
Brad Boyd. He pulled in 22
catches for 298 yards and five
touchdowns last season.
The interior line returns cen
ter William McDonald, guard Ty
ler La Fauci and tackle Richard
Brooks but newcomers Doug
Boute and Clay Cain beat out let-
terman Phil Moses and Russell
Herald for the remaining tackle
and guard posts, respectively. The
five starters average out to 234
pounds per man.
“LSU completely dominated
Colorado,” said A&M head coach
Emory Bellard in his press con
ference Tueesday. “They have
a lot of offensive threats and
they are outstanding defensively.

A&M Soccer Squad Edges Texas;
To Host Rice Here Next Saturday
The A&M Soccer Team slipped
past University of Texas 2-1 Sat
urday in its first game of the
season.
Goals by Mehrdad Farrokhnia
and team captain Mehdi proved
to be too much for the top-ranked
U T team.
The only goal for Texas, 1972
conference winners, came on a
free-kick shot, resulting from a
penalty against A&M.
Although not a university-
fsponsored team, the members
actively participate in all con
ference games.
In the absence of a formal
coach, an elected team captain
arranges the game schedule and
coaches the team.
Although part of their expenses
are covered by proceeds from the
Exchange Store, most of the
travel expenses rest with the in
dividual players, including the
use of personal cars for out-of-
town games.
The next home game will be
Sept. 29 against Rice at 2 p. m.
on the soccer field. Admission is
free.
