Gen. John Mitchell and ex-Commerce Sec retary Maurice Stans in connec tion with a secret $200,000 con tribution to President Nixon’s re- election campaign. District Court Judge Lee Gag- liardi directed defense and prose cution to decide upon a mutually satisfactory new date for the trial of the two former Cabinet offi cials. He previously had refused a delay. However, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement in their initial get-together, and Gagliardi took the matter of a new trial date under advisement. The government was amenable to a month’s adjournment. Mitchell’s forces wanted the trial postponed until three months after the Senate Watergate hear ings end, and Stans’ lawyers sought a delay at least until Nov. 26. Mitchell and Stans were charg ed with conspiracy, obstruction of justice and perjury in their campaign dealings last year with fugitive financier Robert Vesco. An extraordinary panel of 1,500 prospective jurors already was on hand for the trial’s scheduled be ginning in the federal courthouse at Foley Square. Defense lawyers carried their request for a delay in the trial to the Circuit Court of Appeals during the day. In a 2-1 deci sion, the appellate judges held they had no power to reverse Gagliardi’s refusal to postpone the trial. But they said they would have granted a delay if they could, and they urged him Women Duo Wins Saturday Car Rally Points were made for Women’s Lib in the A&M Sports Car Club’s first rally of the 1973-74 school year. A driver-navigator team of Ann Marie McCormick and Ellen Wil liams won. They piloted a Pinto over a 76-mile course for top prize in the TAMSCC event that ended at Texas World Speedway. Seven other students figured in prizes. The club, which meets Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the old College Station City Hall, con cluded the Saturday rally with movies and a party at TWS. A Toyota driven by Rich Adams and Vega driven by Pat White tied for second. Adams was as sisted by navigators Mark Philpy and Roj Kent. Phil Henning han dled maps and computed speeds for White. Cindy Wilke and Ste phen Goble in a Toyota placed fourth. Seventeen teams competed. Club president Bill Williams was rally master. A sports car rally requires each team to drive a certain route in a specified time interval. Points are deducted for running over or un der time. Questions about things seen along the route help decide winners. Frat Runs Ticket Exchange A&M’s service fraternity oper ates a ticket exchange booth for Aggie home football games. Attorneys for Mitchell Stans argued for a delay on grounds that the pressures of Watergate had interfered with their preparation for the Vesco case. Both defendants have ap peared before Watergate inves tigators in Washington. SAN ANTONIO ) _ Ameri can investments are welcome in Mexico “provided they are made in fields which require additional capital and are also made in part nership with Mexican investors,” Mexico’s ambassador to the Unit ed States said Tuesday. Jose Juan de Olloqui spoke to businessmen at a seminar held in conjunction with the first an- naul Mexican Trade Fair here, said to be Mexico’s largest for eign trade exposition in history. He said Mexico, as well as Canada and Australia, “are now screening more closely foreign investments and especially are discouraging takeovers of existing domestically controlled enter prises. “This was a source of preoccu pation in Mexico, inasmuch as when a Mexican firm was taken over by foreign capital, that ac tion did not result in a new in vestment to further production, but was merely a displacement of Mexican capital,” de Olloqui said. Mexico’s latest laws on foreign investments “eliminate” doubts among investors, he said. “Investors will adjust them selves if they know the rules, but if there is distrust, the doubts become greater and then, there will not be any reinvestment,” he said. However, de Olloqui said, “The future is uncertain” and then mentioned tariff preferences con tained in the “Trade Reform Act of 1973” which he said President Nixon has submitted to the Unit ed States Congress. He did not laud or criticize the Nixon trade proposals but he said, “It is necessary to main tain world condition which will permit each country to obtain re sults from its labors. “We are interested in reason able conditions that will permit us to carry forward an orderly economic development, and not in donations of any type,” he said. A San Antonio Chamber of Commerce spokesman said about 2,000 buyers are registered! the fair, which runs through Fj day at the HemisFair exhibit^ The chamber is cosponsoringj event with the Mexican Instil* for Foreign Trade.
