Forty President’s Scholars have
been named for Texas A&M
University’s Class of 1978.
The high school seniors selected
for Texas A&M’s most prestigi
ous scholarship will enroll next
fall. As President’s Scholars,
they receive $1,000 a year for up
to five years undergraduate
study.
The President’s Scholar pro
gram was initiated in 1967 with
ten of the state’s top high school
scholars named for the first
awards. It is designed to recog
nize outstanding scholarship and
leadership among high school
seniors, and keep Texas’ most
promising students in the state
for the university studies.
Eleven more President’s Schol
ars were named this year than in
1972, according to Student Aid
Director Robert M. Logan. With
the 29 President’s Scholars who
enrolled this fall, the university
has recognized 151 students with
the prestige award.
The Class of ’78 President’s
Scholars were selected by the
Faculty Scholarships Committee
from over 600 top students nomi
nated by their high school prin
cipals. To be considered, the nom
inee must not only rank high in
scholastic achievements but show,
through church, school and com
munity activities, evidence of non-
academic interests and leadership
ability.

Giving Better Service For
27 Years In Bryan
HOUSTON UP) — The Harris
County medical examiner offi
cially has identified mass mur
der victims mistakenly buried in
Georgia as David Hilligiest, 13,
and Gregory Malley Winkle, 15,
both of Houston.
Dr. Joseph A. Jachimczyk said
Monday their remains were mis
takenly identified as Jerry Lynn
Waldrop, 13, and Donald Edward
Waldrop, former Houston resi
dents whose father, Everett Wal
drop, now lives in Atlanta, Ga.
The bodies of the Waldrop broth
ers remain in the morgue here, he
said.
He said county officials now
are investigating legal proced
ures for returning the bodies of
Hilligiest and Winkle to Hous
ton and sending the Walrop
Navy ROTC
Swears in 52
Midshipmen
A&M’s Naval ROTC program
reached a historic point Thurs
day when fifty-two NROTC Ca
dets were sworn in as Naval Re
serve midshipmen.
Cadets given the oaths of en
listment and office by Col. Clar
ence Hogan include 35 freshmen
and 17 junior scholarship stu
dents.
The Navy Reserve midshipmen
are an integral part of the Corps
of Cadets. They are organized
in a battalion of NROTC com
panies, or located individually in

athletic units, or in the Texas

brothers to Georgia for burial.
Jachimczyk said all four bodies
were found in a Houston boat
shed. They were among 27 bodies
of teen-age boys recovered in
Houston and two other areas last
month after the mass slayings
came to light.
Jachimczyk said the remains of
the Waldrop brothers were iden
tified on information furnished
by their father.
“We relied on information pro
vided by the father,” Jachimczyk
said. “We relied upon informa
tion he gave us about clothing
found near the bodies, their
height, weight, the shape of their
mouths and dental fillings.”
The medical examiner said cor
rect information of all four
youths was made later through
dental records received by his of
fice.
Jachimczyk said he notified the
Hilligiest and Winkle families
Friday but withheld public re
lease at the request of the fami
lies until other relatives could be
notified. However, other Hous
ton sources released the identifi
cations late Friday.
The mass murder case broke
Aug. 8 when Elmer Wayne Hen
ley Jr., 17, notified police he had
shot to death Dean Arnold Corll,
33, during a party at Corll’s
home. He identified Corll as the
leader in a homosexual torture-
murder ring.
Henley and David Owen
Brooks, 18, led officers to the
graves of 27 victims. Henley has
been indicted on six murder
charges and Brooks has been
indicted on four. Eighteen of the
27 victims now have been identi
fied.
