The Aggies romped through a
spirited football drill in cool,
damp weather Wednesday but did
not have full scale contact work.
There was some contact work
for the defensive unit, especially
in the line, as that group con
centrated on stopping Wichita
State plays being run by the
scout team.
Sophomore Kent Krueger was
in a maroon jersey at defensive
left tackle while the usual resi
dent there — Ted Lamp — was
out with a slightly hurt ankle.
At the other end of the field,
Mike Jay was back in action run
ning the first offense from his
quarterback slot after sitting out
Tuesday’s scrimmage as a pre
cautionary measure because of a
hampered right knee.
Ronnie Hubby still was at left
half in place of Bubba Bean who
is making a rapid recovery from
the thigh bruise he received in
last Friday’s scrimmage. Bean
likely will be back in action later
this week.
The offense continued to work
on timing, both in line blocking
and backfield execution.
Freshman quarterback David
Shipman, who suffered a slight
knee sprain in Tuesday’s scrim
mage, was walking around in
shorts but did not take part in
the practice. He’s expected to
make a rather rapid recovery,
too.
with the session.
“This was one of the best days
since we started,” Conover said.
“The kids were getting used to
the system and reacted well.”
Conover cited safety Bruce
Henley for outstanding work dur
ing the dummy scrimmage. Hen
ley intercepted five passes as the
overall defense stood out.
neck muscle and freshman line
backer Flynn Ducy was sidelined
with a bruised knee.
Coach Grant Teaff said the
Bears were about on schedule in
their preparation for the season’s
opener here Sept. 15 against Ok
lahoma.

FORT WORTH UP) — Texas
Christian University’s varsity
trounced the freshmen 47-6 in a
soggy scrimmage on the Horned
Frogs’ new Tartan turf field
Wednesday.
Seven touchdowns, three by the
first unit, were recorded by the
varsity.
“I was pleased with the scrim
mage,” said Coach Billy Tohill.
“It gave us a good chance to see
what we can do on our new arti
ficial surface under sloppy condi
tions.” There was a lot of slip
ping and sliding but we got some
things accomplished. Kent Mar
shall moved the ball well. And
the freshmen showed they weren’t
afraid to hang in there.”
WACO (A*) — A cool front pro
vided a perfect backdrop to Bay
lor football Wednesday and the
Bears responded with a crisp
work-out despite the absence
from contact work of three reg
ulars.
Tailback Gary Lacy of San
Angelo and fullback Pat McNeil
of Killeen were kept out of hit
ting with bruised shoulders. De
fensive tackle Phil Terry of
Houston missed with a pulled
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. <A>) —
The Arkansas Razorbacks aban
doned their normal full pads for
shoulder pads Wednesday and
worked out two hours in the rain.
Coach Frank Broyles said he
was pleased with his team’s prac
tice despite the bad weather.
“I hate to practice in rain any
time, but we did get something
accomplished today anyway,” he
said.
Broyles said the weather con
tinued to hurt the team’s passing
practice.
