Aggie Defense Spotlighted
The No. 1 defense took the spot
light Tuesday as the Texas Ag
gies ran through a full-scale
scrimmage in light-to-heavy rain.
In one half of play, the top de
fenders allowed a total of five
yards rushing in 18 plays and had
three passes completed on them
in 11 attempts for 34 yards.
Safety James Daniels came up
with an interception for the Ma
roon unit.
“There were some real good
points on defense,” coach Emory
Bellard said following the two
and one-half hour scrimmage.
“But the offense was very poor.
The defense showed a lot of con
sistency. We still have a ways to
go.”
There were only three touch
downs scored in the session. Full
back Alvin Bowers tallied from
seven yards out for the Maroon.
Fullback Bucky Sams scored from
one yard out for the No. 2 de
fense, and freshman split end
Robert Verde caught a 42-yard
touchdown pass from senior quar-
tferback Tim Trimmier for the No.
8 offense.
The second and third defensive
units, composed of mainly fresh
men and sophomores, more than
held their own.
No. 1 quarterback Mike Jay was
held out of the scrimmage for pre
cautionary reasons. Freshman
David Shipman guided the Ma
roon offense until sustaining a
slight knee sprain in the first
half. Freshman David Walker fin
ished the half with the Maroon
offense and also guided the No. 2
offense.

AUSTIN (A»)—Linebacker and
co-captain Glen Gaspard of the
Texas Longhorns has no tear in
his injured right knee and will not
require surgery, a school spokes
man said Tuesday.
A team doctor put an elastic
support on the knee after a thor
ough examination, the spokesman
said.
Gaspard will begin conditioning
drills Wednesday. He missed the
two-a-day drills, which ended
Tuesday.

The Arkansas Razorbacks worked
for two hours under rainy skies
Tuesday and Coach Frank Broyles
said he didn't mind the wetness.
“It's the first chance to prac
tice in the rain this fall,” Broyles
said, adding the Razorbacks need
ed a drill for handling a wet ball.
Sophomore Mike Kirkland con
tinued his work as the No. 1
Razorback quarterback. Broyles
said Kirkland would handle place
kicking responsibilities, but soph
omore Tommey Cheyne of Fort
Smith probably would take care
of punting duties.
