The Aggie
GOURMET
By S. SHARIQ YOSUFZAI
As the summer draws inexor
ably to its end, we feel the time
has come to summarize the vari
ous types of cusine we have sam
pled in this space. This column
will be different from ones in the
past inasmuch as we will try to
rate these restaurants on a
G.P.R. The main consideration in
rating the restaurant is the qual
ity of food and the service. At
mosphere is given virtually no
points other than a minimum
standard of cleanliness, and crea
tivity is expected. We have in
cluded certain restaurants which
by no stretch of the imagination
can be called “gourmet” but they
are included here because they are
frequently visited by students.
What follows may be called the
“Aggie Gourmet Guide to Res
taurants.”
Trader Yic’s — This is truly
one of the finest overall restau
rants in Texas. Stay away from
their Chinese food. Try the
Trader Vic’s Green Soup, Malay
an appetizers, Rangoon crab,
stuffed shrimp, cosmo salad, In
donesian lamb roast or hot In
dian shrimp curry. Top off your
meal with a Koka ice-cream
flambe. The only bad part about
Trader Vic’s is the forward na
ture of the waiters in respect to
their tips. The drinks are excel
lent. Try the Mai Tai, frozen
daiquiri, London sour or whiskey
sour. Trader Vic’s is located ip,
the Shamrock Hilton in Houston
on the cprner of Main and Hol
combe streets. We think Trader
Vic’s deserves a G.P.R. of 3.75.
The Bacchanal is a Greek res
taurant on the Westheimer res
taurant row in Houston with
spectacular entertainment. The
trio of dancers, the belly dances
and the Greek orchestra are all
excellent. The food unfortunate
ly is mediocre. Try the shish ke
bab (Greek style), the stuffed
eggplant and the Baklava. Stay
away from their appetizers as
they are terrible. Arrive around
7:00 and resist all attempts to be
seated on the upper level as it
affords a terrible view of the
stage. The Bacchanal gets a
G.P.R. of 3.25,
The Parthenon is a Greek res
taurant with more of a family
atmosphere. The food is spec
tacular but the entertainment is
mediocre. Try their excellent
Greek appetizers, calves livers,
scuffed eggplant, stuffed grape
leaves or the eggplant. Do not
arrive until 9:30. The Parthenon
is located on Fannin Street in
downtown Houston and gets a
G.P.R. of 3.30.
The Tokyo Steak House in Bry
an (on Texas Avenue) has excel
lent food in its steak room. Try
the teppanyaki steak or the suki-
yaki steak with sake. The Tokyo
Steak House receives a G.P.R. of
3.50.
The Japanese Steak House has
very Americanized Japanese food
at exorbitant prices. We recom
mend that you stay away from
this place which is located next
to the Galleria in Houston. The
Japanese Steak House deserves a
G.P.R. of 1.75.
Ari’s Grenoville is a French
restaurant located on the West-
heimer row. Try to get an out
side table. Order the 1’escargot,
French onion soup, quiche de dor-
raine, Chateaubriand and the
crepe’s cherries flambe. Ari’s re
ceives a G.P.R. of 3.25.
The Windmill Dinner Theater
— On Sunday’s, students can get
a discount, see a play and have
dinner at the Windmill for only
$3.68 during the matinee show.
The food is horrible. The Wind
mill is located in Town and Coun
try Village in Houston and de
serves a G.P.R. of 2.80 primarily
because its novelty deserves at
least one visit.
The Texan is located in Bryan
and has very good food. Start off
your meal with the French onion
soup or the beef teriyaki. For an
entree try the flaming shish ke
babs, the shrimp tempura or the
Ichicken Neopolitane. We give
the Texan a G.P.R. of 3.40.
The Oakridge Smokehouse in
College Station intrigued several
people with its “all you can eat”
shrimp night. Not only do you
have to wait two hours to get
served and lose your appetite by
the time the food finally arrives
but you are also greatly disap
pointed with their fried shrimp.
The Oakridge Smokehouse de*
serves a G.P.R. of 0.75.
Valian’s opposite the Sham
rock Hilton in Houston, is a
good “family” restaurant. The
fohd can be characterized as “not
bad”. We recommend their sea
food platter or their shish ke
babs. Unfortunately they some
times have a tendency to serve
the latter on a bed of raw rice
which creates a problem. We give
Valian’s a G.P.R. of 2.80.
Jamie’s Hamburgers has truly
good hamburgers. The only thing
wrong with Jamie’s is that it does
not have an A&M pennant on
their wall displaying SWC para
phernalia. Jamie’s chili burger is
very good. It is located on Main
Street in Houston and deserves
a G.P.R. of 3.25.
In evaluating these G.P.R.’s
keep in mind that they are essen
tially subjective. A G.P.R. of 3.40
and above is “excellent,” 3.25-
3.39 is in the “good” category,
2.80-3.25 is “fair” and below 2.80
is in the “very poor” category.
We acknowledge the services
rendered by Ted Paup, Mike Pen-
ick, Donn Webb, Joe Walker,
John Rosenbaum, Barb Sears and
John Nash in making this guide
possible.
Residence halls for men are
Dunn, White, Utay, Hart, Law,
Puryear, Legett, Milner, Walton,
Hotard, Moses, Davis-Gary, Mc-
Innis, Moore, Schuhmacher and
part of Crocker, Madeley an
nounced.
Women will be housed in Fow
ler, Hughes and Keathley Halls
on the west side of the campus,
and in Krueger Hall.
Cadet Corps facilities will in
clude Spence, Kiest, Briggs,
Fountain, Gainer, Lacy, Leon
ard, Harrell, Whiteley and Har
rington Halls.
Veterans Get
Early Payment
Veterans attending A&M under
the GI bill may have some money
waiting for them at the Vet
eran’s Affairs office on the first
floor of the YMCA.
Those GI bill students who re
acted correctly to a letter mailed
to them early this summer by the
Veterans Administration can now
pick up their advance payment
checks in the YMCA.
The checks represent a partial
payment for August and all of
September, according to Howard
S. Perry, associate dean of stu
dents.
Perry also advised veterans who
plan to attend both Fall and
Spring semesters to make sure
of their status for payment of
benefits during the Christmas
break.
New Sociology
Course Offered
For the first time at Texas
A&M a formal course on the
Mexican American population is
being offered for this fall.
The course will meet once a
week — Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m. It
can be taken for graduate credit
and carries a value of 3 credit
hours.
Dr. William P. Kuvlesky has
responsibility for the course and
indicates he plans to handle the
course as a seminar — stressing
student involvement. He has in
dicated that anyone desiring to
participate in the course should
have as a prerequisite at least six
hours of some combination of so
ciology, psychology, and anthro
pology.
The course will stress a review
of current research literature and
use of expert speakers or panels
on particular topics. A research
paper will be required.
The initial meeting of the class
will be Tuesday, Sept. 4 in Room
310, Bolton Hall.
