THE BAH
Secretary Retires, Ends Long Association With A&l
DAI
A secretary with a flair for
dealing with people retires with
her boss Aug. 31.
Mrs. Nettie Crenshaw, admini
strative secretary to Dean of Stu
dents James P. Hannigan, ends
24 years at A&M.
Except for “time out for two
sons,” she has worked at A&M
since 1935. The last five years
were with Dean Hannigan.
“The thing I’ve enjoyed most is
getting to know students and
working with them,” Mrs. Cren
shaw said.
The first person visitors en
counter at the dean’s office, she
is vital to its operation and ad
mired by co-workers for her abili
ties.
“Nettie is a super outstanding
secretary,” Dean Hannigan said.
“She does a lot more than the
average secretary and handles a
heavy percentage of visitors.
Many problems and requests nev
er get past her. Her long service
at A&M px’ovides most answers
to questions we get.”
'Bomberos ‘
Registered
Students from nine countries
and four states were on hand
Monday for the Spanish-pseaking
fire school at A&M.
“Bomberos,” as firemen are
called in Spanish-speaking coun
tries, came from Texas, Arizona,
Colorado and Ohio; from 21 states
in Mexico and Spain, Venezuela,
Nicaragua, Bolivia, Costa Rica,
Colombia, Honduras and Peru for
this year’s school.
Total registered students for
the school is 123, according to
John R. Rauch, instructor at the
Texas Firemen’s Training School.
This represents an increase of two
students over last year.
The students are joined by 68
(instructors, administrative per
sonnel and manufacturers’ repre
sentatives. They will supervise
and assist in classroom and field
training exercises.
A large block of the students
were flown from Mexico City in
a chartered aircraft by the Mexi
can Association of Health and
Security. All the students were
treated to a banquet given in
their honor by the Amigos Club
of Bryan Sunday.
The “bomberos” will attend
week-long classes ranging from
basic firefighting to combating
petroleum, gas and chemical fires.

Dean Hannigan also cited Mrs.
Crenshaw's “great friendship”
with student leaders, her outgo
ing personality and “extremely
accurate” work with budgets and
other office work.
Besides direct student contacts,
the dean has organizational re
sponsibility for the Housing Of
fice, University Hospital, MSC,
YMCA, deans of men and women,
commandant, veterans advisor and
foreign student advisor.
“Mrs. Crenshaw treats people
like part of her own family,” ob
served Dean of Men Charles
Powell. “She is a very effective
person. Nothing ever seems to
upset her.”
Another facet of the former
Texas Agricultural Extension
Service secretary’s ability was
highlighted by Malon Southerland,
assistant to the dean.
“Mrs. Crenshaw is able to pry
from a student what his or her
request actually is and properly
assist them in seeing the individ
ual or office that can solve their
problem, whether the dean or an
other campus office,” he said.
He also cited her “memory for
places, events, people and asso
ciating one with the other.”
Associate Dean Howard Perry
said the retiring senior secretary
“is a real asset to our offices.
She is an efficient secretary and
extremely helpful to students,
parents and vistors. If she doesn’t
know an answer, she finds it.”
“Mrs. Crenshaw tells it like it
is,” observed a student leader.
Powell noted she is looking for
ward to retirement, “because she’s
a lively person. She wants to
turn her time to her home and
husband.”
“I can hardly wait,” Mrs. Cren
shaw remarked. “There is so much
to do, furniture to refinish, photo
albums to put together for the
boys—things I’ve long planned
but never had time for.”
She was previously secretary to
directors of the Agricultural Ex
tension Service, the Agricultural
Experiment Station and former
Agriculture Dean R. E. Patterson.
She worked part-time another
two years for the
and Biophysics Departmet!
