Miss Goldsmith, 17, had origin ally wanted to attend the Univer sity of Texas at Austin but South west Conference rules prohibit granting athletic scholarships to women. The same SWC rules apply to A&M but a special scholarship was arranged through the A&M president’s office. Miss Goldsmith was recruited by Emory Bellard, A&M Ath letic Director. She had scholarship offers from the University of Florida and the University of Arizona but she had said she wanted to stay in Texas. In 1972 she was ranked No. 7 in the nation among junior girls by Golf U.S.A. magazine and fin ished second among junior girls at the USGA’s Women’s Open in Rochester, N.Y. e Church..For a Fuller Life..For You.. OUT OF THE The game of golf reveals something fundamental in the character of man. For when man builds a golf course he deliberately creates hazards for himself. He builds his fairways between clumps of trees . . . dots them with bunkers and sand traps . . . often terraces his greens with confusing slopes. The whole idea—to make things harder for himself! It is this same trait in human character that constantly concerns our churches. Christianity doesn’t teach that life can be—or should be—easy. It teaches us that hazards must challenge us to choose the right way. And it teaches men how to recover from their mistakes—with God’s help. For thousands who find themselves in one of the traps of life . . . our religion offers precious help and reassurance. Real Specials Hard To Find, Reports Food Specialist Meat prices hover at ceiling prices, and “real specials” are hard to find, Mrs. Gwendolyne Clyatt reported this week. The consumer marketing infor mation specialist, A&M’s Texas Agricultural Extension Service, listed beef-department best val ues as chuck cuts, round steaks and ground beef. “A substitute hamburger is available in some stores,” she said. This is ground beef with a soy protein added. Its price is sub stantially lower than regular ground beef; however, this may increase some as the price of soy beans continues to rise. Its pro tein is about the same as regular ground beef—and fat is lower.” In pork, Mrs. Clyatt recom mended Boston butt roasts, quar ter-loin sliced and rib-end roasts. “Fryer chicken and egg prices remain about the same as a week with large-size eggs in best sup ply, while turkeys have increased a bit. “Fryer chickens are still good buys in most markets even though prices have advanced consider ably the past few months. “For economy and good eating, invite friends over for backyard barbecued chicken. “Cheese products also are at high levels.” Mrs. Clyatt cited supply-demand factors as one reason for rising prices, noting “this is true not only in this country, but through out the world — most of these products aren’t in large enough supply to keep pace with con sumer demand.” She suggested dry beans as “a summertime must,” served hot to accompany chilled salad plates boasting seasonally available fresh fruits and vegetables. “Many vegetables are behind schedule due to the wet weather earlier, but quality is generally good,” she said. “Dry onion and potato supplies continue on the light side with relatively high price tags, and carrot supplies are less than usual at this season. “Fresh fruit and vegetable items in best supply at the most reasonable prices include banan as, oranges, cherries, cantaloupes and watermelons. “Also peaches, grapes, nectar ines, celery, okra, black-eye and purple - hull peas, hard - shell squash, cabbage, corn, radishes, bell peppers, green onions and cucumbers.” College Station Swim Club Scheduled For Two Meets The College Station Swim Club will be busy the remainder of this week, with meets in both Houston and Waco. CSSC Coach Steve Montgomery said the club’s intermediate swim mers go to a “B” and “C” level meet Wednesday at Meyerland Country Club in Houston. They will be joined by the more advanced swimmers for the three- day Huaco Invitational at Waco beginning Thursday. The Waco meet is for levels “A” through “C.” More than 50 local boys and girls will participate in the two AAU-sanctioned meets, Mont gomery noted.
