The Aggies finished fourth in round-robin tennis action with a 27-23 match record. SMU (34-5), Houston (38-11) and Texas (33- 16) finished ahead of A&M and are expected as top contenders on winning the conference meet. In golf action, A&M has enter ed five in the nine team medal play tourney. The top four scores only count toward the champion ship that is expected to be be tween Texas and Houston. introductory sale 25% off on all Mavimekko Women’s Clothing at custom house 319 Patricia St. Open Tues - Sat. - 846-1014 C.S. 10 - 6 PETAL $250 ALSO TO 2100 WED. Main A&M’s golf entrants are Paul Dieckert, Bill Schmidt, Randy Tickner and Clay Dozier. Tennis entrants are Bill Wright, Bill Hoover, Dan Courson, Carter Lomax in singles cbmpetition and Courson-Lomax and Wright- Hoover entered in doubles. Hoover is the team’s top point getter so far this season, winning six of his seven conference matches with the lone loss coming at the hands of SMU’s Joe Edles in Wednesday’s SMU-A&M clash which the Mustangs won 6-1. Singles action begins at Texas’ Varsity Courts at 10 a.m. both Friday and Saturday with doubles beginning at 1 p.m. Both the singles and doubles competition was won by SMU last year with John Gardner, now coach of the Mustangs, defeating teammate George Hardie while Texas Headed For Ninth; A&M Series Only Obstacle It isn’t instant, but it is a rerun in the final week of the South west Conference baseball race. Texas is going after its ninth straight title and TCU is in a position — barely — to claim the crown. During Texas’ current string of eight straight champion ships, TCU has shared the title with the Longhorns three times but the Frogs have not been able to displace Texas as the SWC representative in the NCAA play offs. The TCU hope is a slim one as Texas moves into College Station for two games Friday and one Saturday against the Aggies, while the Frogs follow the same schedule in Houston against Rice. TCU must sweep its three games and Texas must lose its three for the Frogs to break through as the champions. Or three Texas losses, two TCU vic tories and a rainout would give the Frogs their fourth title share in nine seasons, but Texas would still go to the NCAA tournament by virtue of its three-game sweep of the Frogs to open the confer ence season. It was entering that series that Texas coach Cliff Gustafson made a heady decision. His freshman third baseman was performing well afield, but hitting a puny .200. Gustafson decided to stay with him and “hope he hits a little.” The third baseman is Keith Moreland and he didn’t hit a little, after all. He hit a lot. Moreland upped his average six percentage points to .468 last weekend to lead the SWC in batting for the third straight week, drove in two runs to hike his RBI lead to 19 and increased his conference-lead- They’re Here!! He’s tied for the home run lead with four. The two telling series this weekend could be dominated by the conference’s leading pitchers. Texas’ Ron Roznovsky boasts a 6-0 record while freshman Rich ard Wortham is 4-0. They'll prob ably face Aggie aces Bobby Witt- kamp (2-0) and Bobby Falcon (3-2), who has 56 strikeouts in 33 % innings. Texas is chasing a long-stand ing tradition in its quest for the title. Longhorn teams have won 47 of the 57 previous SWC titles, 40 of them outright. And Gustaf son has won four titles outright and shared another in his five years as Longhorn head coach. Texas’ longest string of baseball titles is 11, coming from 1943 through 1954, with no race being held in 1944. The Longhorns have other streaks of eight, seven and six going—and they could all be forgotten by the time Moreland is a senior. the team of Hardie and Tim Vann defeated Texas’ Avery Rush and Ron Touchon. Vann, undefeated in conference matches this season, did not enter the conference meet and thus no defending champion is back. Among strong singles entries this year are SMU’s Hardie (6-0), UT’s Dan Nelson (5-2) and Hous ton’s Lee Merry (5-1). In doubles competition, Merry and Dale Og den (3-1), Nelson and Graham Whaling (5-2) and Hardie and Joe Edles should be top contend ers for the championship. In golf team play, it appears to be a tight race between defend ing champion Texas and first time eligible entrant Houston. Houston won the SWC match- play tourney last fall. The two teams have met head-to-head nine times this year and have won every tourney entered be tween them. In their series this year Hous ton has won the Match play, the Houston Atoscocita, LSU, Border Olympics, and the All-America, fc room ar Rive for th proved th 1U Syst< e noted as iact on r ses were to curb the U er source while Texas has won Montal the Tucker at Albuquerque, Sil Diego, and the Morris Williaafcjjjty c0S at Austin. ^ the nat j In last year’s meet, Texas feated SMU by nine strokes returns three members of team in Ben Crenshaw, B Buckman and Tony Pfaff. k kansas was third followed lj A&M, TCU, Tech, Baylor avl^ boar d Ri ce * fcg increas Individual favorites will be bjory costs time NCAA champ Crenshaw aAe increas Houston’s Bill Rogers who wiKce halls t play in the same threesome ditUbnormally ing competition.
