Steele, A&M student from Refugio, has been named to the cast of an outdoor musical drama performed in the Palo Duro Canyon amphitheater near Ama rillo. “Texas’' is a musical portrayal of Texas Panhandle history. It will run from June 21 to August 25. Member of the Aggie Players and director of the Fallout The ater production “Count Dracula,” Steele was selected for dancing and acting parts in the nationally recognized “Texas.” It will be in its eighth season this summer. Steele and four other TAMU theater arts participants audition ed. He was notified Wednesday of his acceptance. “It’s a great opportunity,” commented Steele, a junior educa tion curriculum and instruction major who plans to teach theater arts. He said the “Texas” cast will report May 27 at the campus of West Texas State University in Canyon. Rehearsals for the Paul Green-written story of Texas in the 1880s begin shortly after ward. Steele said he had about given up on being accepted. He was considering returning to Refugio to seek summer employment. The 13 weeks in the Panhandle will pay a salary. “Summer stock usually requires the actor to pay,” he noted. “I’ve always been interested in theater. I want to teach it, and in order to teach, I must have experience.” An Aggie Player with two years experience, Steele had lead roles in “The Misanthrope” and “Forty Carats.” Besides directing the Fallout Theater production that runs April 26-28 at the Zachry Engineering Center, he has done “a lot of technical work" on “Blythe Spirit,” for which he was stage manager, and “Ghost” and “Count Dracula.” He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma. At Refugio High School, the A&M Distinguished Student was named best actor in Texas Inter scholastic League one-act play district competition. He has a 3.6 overall grade point average. Steele is working for a teach ing certificate in theater arts and English along with a bachelor’s degree. TAMU theater arts chairman C. K. Esten and associate Robert Wenck consider Steele one of the program’s top students. “Texas” will play at the Pioneer Amphitheater in Palo Duro Can yon every weeknight except Sun day during the June 21-August 25 run. Curtain time will be 8:30 p.m. The site is on Texas High way 217, about 20 miles east of Canyon. “Texas” is a production of the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foun dation. ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE MAJORS Let us help you: PLAN AHEAD To Become a CPA THE BECKER CPA REVIEW COURSE Houston 713/223-8936 Our Successful Students Represent 1/5 of USA Troops Advertise The Army WASHINGTON UP)—At a cost per man of $25 a day plus travel expenses, the Pentagon is mar shaling troops from some of its proudest combat units to sell the volunteer army. If the program is expensive, the Army says it is also success ful. In a tradition dating back to the Spanish-American War when Teddy Roosevelt organized his Rough Riders from among college students, Indians and Western outlaws, the Army is turning over to combat commanders some of the responsibility for recruiting their own troops. Commanding generals of units like the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky., are sending young soldiers back to their home towns as living examples of the new Army. In addition to their regular pay, they receive $25 a day, even if they live at home. Travel to and from their units is covered too. Since the program began in February 1971, the Army says 38,000 young men have come in under its “Unit of Choice Pro gram.” BATTALION CLASSIFIED FOR RENT Limited number of vacancies for room board at local boarding house for ner months. FAMILY AND STUDENT SECTIONS. As many as 1,150 canvassers were sent to points all over the country; some went thousands of miles from their units. There are currently about 300 canvassers living at home or on the civilian economy. In the first 18 months of the program, the canvassers were paid only their normal military salaries. As the result of a ruling by the Pentagon’s comptroller, the Army decided the canvassers would have to receive the $25 daily temporary duty pay and travel expenses. Lt. Col. G. W. Bilderback, a Pentagon administrator of the program, said the added costs forced the Army to cut the num ber of canvassers at least in half. Despite the cutback, Bilderback said, more troops are joining spe cific combat units than ever be fore. Some 28,000 of the 38,000 recruited so far have signed up since the start of fiscal year 1973 last July 1.
