Reds Ask For Resignation Of Cambodian Head
SAIGON <AP) — Despite plan
ned reforms in the Cambodian
government, North Vietnam made
clear in a Radio Hanoi broadcast
Wednesday that there can be no
progress to peace until President
Lon Nol steps down.
Official Washington sources
remained optimistic that the re
organization might encourage
cease-fire talks, but observers
in Phnom Penh tended to sup
port the Hanoi position.
Commenting on Lon Nol’s an
nounced plans to form a new
government that would include
members of opposition parties,
Radio Hanoi said the reorganiza
tion “is aimed at settling in
ternal conflicts of the Lon Nol
puppet government which is de
teriorating while confronted with
greater and greater military and
political defeats.”
“Under American pressure,”
Radio Hanoi continued, “Lon Nol
has been forced to introduce a
number of so-called opposition
elements into his Cabinet so that
it may have a “broader political
base.”
“However reformed it may be,
Women Activist To Speak Here
Cathy Bonner, state director
of the Texas Women’s Political
Caucus, will address the local
chapter tonight.
Bonner’s topic will be “Wom
en’s Changing Role in Society
and Politics.”
The 7:30 p.m. meeting will be
I in the Library, Room 226. It is
I politically non-partisan and open
I to all interested persons.
Primarily concerned with wom
en’s rights and issues, the Wom
en’s Caucus encourages women
to take a more active part in the
political process. The national
organization was formed in July,
1971. The Texas group organ
ized in March, 1972. Its chair
person is Frances Farenthold.
Bonner spends most of her
time in Austin. She has lobbied
for credit reform, child care leg
islation and family planning re
form, among other issues.
the Lon Nol puppet government
still remains an instrument of the
U.S. imperialists. . .
The Radio Hanoi statements
indicated that Cambodian insurg
ents would continue a military
drive in hopes of forcing Lon
Nol out.
Kruse To Visit
London As Grad
Layne E. Kruse will study for
a master’s degree in international
relations in London next fall
through a Rotary Foundation
graduate fellowship.
The student body president
from McGregor was recently ac
cepted for the M.S. degree work
at the London School of Econom
ics.
A graduating senior in econom
ics, Kruse received the fellowship
in competition with other Texas
applicants. He was sponsored in
the program by Rotary Interna
tional District 587 in Texas.
The fellowship will cover his
studies from October, 1973, to
August, 1974.
The Cambodian situation ap
peared to be a playback of Viet
nam. The Communists had ac
cused the United States of con
tinuing to “Vietnamize” the war.
For nearly five years the peace
talks remained stalled because
they refused to deal with the
Saigon regime of President
Nguyen Van Thieu.
Like the Thieu government, the
Lon Nol regime has been criti
cized for being distant from the
people, corrupt and oppressive.
U. S. sources said that the
United States pressured Lon Nol
into agreeing to form a new gov
ernment to include opposition ele
ments. President Nixon was re
ported to have sent word that
this was his wish with special
emissary, Gen. Alexander M.
Haig, Jr. Haig visited Phnom
Penh last week and conferred
with Lon Nol.
Lon Nol said in a radio address
Tuesday night that he will choose
a new prime minister and would
appoint 11 permanent political
figures from his party and two
opposition parties to a new coun
cil of political advisers.

Lady, 2 Girls Die
In Shooting Spree
HOUSTON <dP) — A gunman
who said “I went out of my head
for 15 or 20 minutes” remained
in custody here Wednesday night
following a shooting spree which
left an elderly woman and two
young girls dead and two other
children wounded.
The man, identified as Larry
DeLon Casey, 21, was charged
with four counts of murder and
two of attempted murder before
Justice of the Peace D. F.
Thompson. The fourth count
stemmed from the shooting he
claimed, in a public statement,
of a grocery store woman clerk
in February.
Casey, 21, speaking to news
men in a low voice in the pres
ence of his lawyers shortly after
his arrest, said he had been
“drinking and smoking mari
juana,” shortly before the shoot
ing spree.
Dead are Beulah K. Davis, 88,
gunned down in front of her
home as she went to pick up the
evening paper; Jana Whotley, 10,
shot and then run over by a car;
and Claire Jakubowski, 5, shot
in the back.
The incident occurred in the
affluent Westbury section of
southwest Houston shortly after
1 p.m.
Two other small girls, Karen
Kurtz, 10, and Lynn Tucker, 10,
were wounded. They were re
ported in fair condition.
“I guess I flew off the handle
for a while,” Casey told news
men. He explained he wanted to
talk to “clear my conscience and
their records too.”
“I don’t have a real cause,” he
added. “My father was murdered
in New York in 1970 . . . robbed
and murdered. I had some re
venge in me somewhere against
society for this ... I didn’t
realize just exactly what I had
done until after it happened.”
Police said the man apparently
had fought with his common law

used as a basis for awards, put
undue pressure on students dur
ing “mid-semester exam week”
and money could possibly be spent
elsewhere to a better advantage.
The resolution also recommends
these reports be sent to only those
students on scholastic probation
or who are failing a course.
The second of these proposals
is trying to demolish mandatory
class attendance. Reasons backing
this resolution include an inade
quate excuse system and denies
the recognition of responsibility
possessed by college students.
External Affairs Chairman
Barb Sears will present a resolu
tion to alter the lease to married

current contract are considered
outdated, too restrictive and legal
