Great Issues Strives For Quality Speakers
Page 6
THE BATTALION
College Station, Texas Wednesday, March
By PEGGY WARWICK
“ ‘There’s got to be no place
deader than A&M and the moon,’
or so say some students,” con
fessed Great Issues Chairman T.
C. Cone, “and sometimes I have
to agree.
“But it’s all there if you look
for it.”
Great Issues, is one of the be-
hind-the-scene groups which
brings nonpolitical speakers to
the campus, hoping that by
reaching students, each will gain
some cultural or intellectual ben
efit.
“I think it’s worth spending
the money to bring someone
here, like Nader, like Buckley,
some of the noted people in their
fields. I’ve had a lot of contro
versy after Nader. ‘Nader was
wrong about this, Nader was
wrong about that,’ and I’ve heard
a lot of people argue back ‘Well,
he was right about this, that or
the other,’ ” said Cone with a
look of satisfaction. “That’s
great! To me that’s the whole
purpose. We’re not here to please
everybody with our speakers. Our
point is to bring somebody here
who can give food for thought,
to invoke some kind of aware
ness in the student that there
are things going on and they
are relevant to A&M.”

Great Issues conducts an an
nual poll to find out whom A&M
students would like to see.
Eighty-five cents of each stu
dent’s services fee are allotted
to the committee. With a budget
under $13,000, they must hire
speakers, pay for travel and food
expenses, publicity and other
miscellaneous costs.
Under the direction of Cone,
the number of speakers has been
cut in half, but they are of a
higher renown.
grams of less noted guests aver
aged 300 persons per lecture.
Cone said that Buckley attracted
2,500 alone. And the April 10
program featuring Rod Serling is
expected to draw a similar crowd.
“People are going to come just
to hear Serling talk,” said Cone,
puffed with confidence in his
cubbyhole-type office, “just to
see if he’s really like he is on
TV. Rod Serling is a man who
has made a very definite impact
on the United States, on the
world as a whole. He’s got to
have one of the best imagina
tions in the world.

To Get Publicity
“These are the people the stu
dents ask for. They see these
people in the news and think
‘What’s he really like, what’s he
got, why is he in the news?’
They want to see and hear these
celebrities and decide for them
selves,” Cone said.
“People tend to judge a uni
versity by its accomplishments.
We of Great Issues feel that Jim
McKay, Daniel Cohen, Buckley,
Nader, Serling, are all accom
plishments. Our purpose is to
try to provide a good service,
something students cannot get in
a classroom, and publicity for the
MSC and university as a whole.”
If event participation is any
indication of this new program
ming’s success, Great Issues has
it in the bag. Last year’s 17 pro-

Television and a movie will
soon be publicizing the Corps of
Cadets and the Aggie Band.
The band will be the subject
of a public service release pro
moting Army ROTC and will be
one of three bands in the com
mercial.
Col. Thomas R. Parsons, com
mandant of the Corps, said, “The
Continental Army Command, the
head of all Army ROTC in Amer
ica, sent requests to all military
bands that might be interested
in appearing in the television
spot. We sent them pictures and
information about the Aggie
Band and it was selected.
“This commercial will be dis
tributed throughout the country,”
Parsons explained. “I get copies
of such releases periodically and
take them to KBTX - TV. The
television station can then run
them when it wants to.
“The M. W. Ayers Advertising

the film. It is under contract to
