More Than Meets The Eye In A&M Elephant Bov
the ‘
By KENNETH STROEBEL
It isn’t true that Aggies don’t
hunt elephants any more because
they got tired of carrying the
decoys.
Aggies still hunt elephants and
you can catch them at it 7:30
next Thursday night at Kyle
Field. That’s when the Army
and Air Force seniors, or ele
phants, will square off against
each other in an annual charity
football game dubbed the Ele
phant Bowl.
But if the name of the Ele
phant Bowl isn’t strange enough,
its cast is. Besides being a char
ity game played by volunteer
Corps seniors, it also seems to
be an athletic adaptation of musi
cal chairs, with each participant
assuming a new role.
The coaches for the Air Force,
'for example, are Aggie varsity
players Max Bird and Kent Fin
ley. Mike Bellar, Doug Neill, Bill
McCauley, Bruce Miller and Don
Griffith are the Army’s coaches.
John McNevin won’t be a yell
leader for this game although he
usually is for the Aggies. This
time the management major
from Angleton will be the Air
Force’s tailback.
“I think we’re starting to get
in shape,” he said. “We’re run
ning a lot of windsprints, getting
the beer out. I’ll tell you, the
first couple of days there were
a lot of sore bodies.”
Tim Booker, commanding offi
cer of Squadron 2, is the Air
Force’s quarterback and Dee Del-
afosse, an engineering technolo
gy major from Houston, is his
backup. Booker, a management
major from Universal City, will
be throwing to wingback Lewis
Nunley, tight end Dennis Tuite,
and Kent Sparger and Randy
Vick who alternate at split end.
Army’s quarterback Jerry Eas
terly of L-l named Steve Dyer,
Buster Carmouche and Steve
Roberts as prospective targets
for his passes, but emphasized
the lineup is tentative and there
would be several other receivers.
The marketing major from Na
cogdoches said his backup is
Company K-l’s Robin Feder, an
industrial technology major from
La Marque.
What makes elephants want to
play football? Booker said after
the Elephant Bowl was initiated
last year, "All the seniors in the
Corps wanted to play football
again.”
Easterly said proceeds
Thursday night’s game m
to the Brazos Valley R e ^,
tion Center.

Easterly added, “We felt it
served a good purpose and that
we should continue it. We gave
around $1,200 to the Brazos Val
ley Mental Health Association.
We thought we’d do it for the
community as well as have some
fun.”
After the Army seniou
last year’s game 2l.2{ i
quarterbacks said tfleyjjj
good chance of winning.
ly added, “I expect it’ll j,
other close game. It perse
won’t be decided until tin
quarter.”
