Senior-Led Aggies Nip Mustangs, 78-75
Tech Wins Conference Title Against Rasorbacks
By BILL HENRY
Battalion Sports Editor
Bob Gobin, Mario Brown and
Jeff Overhouse played their last
Basketball game in G. Rollie
White Coliseum Tuesday nig-ht
and it could have been the most
fulfilling for the three Aggie
aeniors.
Gobin hit two pressure-packed
free throws with 36 seconds re-
jiaining, Brown scored 24 points
and Overhouse hit for ten points

Although Texas Tech won the
thampionship crown by defeating
Arkansas Tuesday night, 64-63,
AiM’s victory leaves the door
Spen for the league’s runner-up
jpot with a victory over TCU
Saturday in Fort Worth.
SMU, the preseason title pick,
dropped out of a possible second
place finish while losing the fifth
game in the last six outings since
defeating A&M in the brawl at
Dallas.
“This game and our game
against Tech Saturday were out
standing,” coach Shelby Metcalf
jaid after the contest. “Mario’s
outside shooting was exceptional.
He's had a virus all week and
just played outstanding.
“SMU played better tonight
than when they beat us in Dallas.
“The crowd was a tremendous
factor to our three seniors. They
have all had outstanding careers
here at Texas A&M.”
SMU’s leading scorer was 6-7
Sammy Hervey with 24 points
followed by Zack Thiel with 16.
Freshman Ira Terrell set a new
SMU school record with 23 re
bounds. Hervey had 13. Randy
Knowles led the Aggies with 12
and Jerry Mercer had nine.
The Mustangs were in control
of the contest throughout the
first 33 minutes and 56 seconds
until A&M took its first lead,
69-68, with 6:04 remaining.
In the first half, SMU took the
fight to the Aggies playing
tough, aggressive basketball
while driving to a 12-point lead,
28-16. Then Brown and Mike
Floyd, who scored 18 points, be
gan to penetrate the huge, tal
ented SMU middle. The two Ag
gie guards scored 14 points be
tween them in less than three
minutes compared to SMU’s six.
During this span, A&M cut the
Mustang margin from ten points
to two and with Webb Williams’
free throw with 2:24 left in the
opening stanza, tied the score at

38.
A&M hit another cold spell
after that scoring only four points
from that point to the buzzer
while the Mustangs took a 46-42
advantage.
In that half, the key to A&M’s
misfortunes was the lack of re
bounding strength as SMU
grabbed 34 compared to A&M’s
21.
The second half was a totally
different story. Metcalf must
have given his Aggies a sip of
the secret formula as his Aggies
refused to he intimidated and
outrebounded the taller Mustangs
30-24 in that final stanza.
The final score could have been
much worse in favor of A&M
had the usually hot free-throw
shooting Aggies hit on numerous
opportunities late in the contest.
Brown hit a 20-foot jumper
with 4:08 remaining closing
SMU’s gap to one, 74-73, then
A&M missed five possible points
from the charity stripe before
Brown hit another long jumper
gaining a one point margin, 75-
74, with 2:03 left.
Floyd then hit the first of a
one-and-one giving the Aggies a
two-point lead, 76-74, with 51
seconds left.
The Mustangs blew a chance
to tie it up with Ira Terrell on
the line with a one-and-one at
tempt. Terrell, a 45 per cent
shooter, hit the first but missed
the second as Gobin was fouled
on the rebound and given a one-
and-one shot.
The steady senior, who scored
only these two points all night,
hit both to give A&M the victory.

The bill, backed by the Texas

provides for revoking drivers’ li

provides for felony fine and pro
