Globetrotters Here Tonight
“G” rated entertainment guar
anteed to delight every age comes
to G. Rollie White Coliseum on
Thursday night.
It features basketballs flitting
all over the place and grinning
faces—on the principals as well
as patrons.
Youngsters who watch TV car
toons already know it’s the fabu
lous, funny Harlem Globetrotters.
Their TAMU Special Attrac
tion game with the Boston Sham
rocks will get going with the
world-famous warmup circle at
8 p.m. The antics of Meadowlark
Lemon, Curly Neal, Bobby Joe
Mason, Bobby Hunter and Doug
Himes, former Prairie View A&M
star, among others will be joined
by an all-star variety show.
TAMU Special Attraction tick
ets for the game, arranged
through the Town Hall Commit
tee of Texas A&M’s Memorial
Student Center, are on sale at
the Student Program Office in
the MSC.
Basketball fans of 89 countries
and virtually every city in Amer
ica have laughed with the Trot
ters through one of their games.
Coming into the 1973 season, the
Trotters had played 11,053
times, entertaining more than 71
million people in 46 years.
“Our attendance continues to
increase as more and more people
find out why the Trotters are
the world’s most popular form of
a family entertainment,” says
Globetrotter President Stan
Greeson.
One reason for the popularity
increase is the weekly cartoon
series on CBS Television. The
show is the top-rated children's
program on the air and seen by
viewers in more than 20 countries.
Joining Meadowlark and Curly
on the Globetrotters’ national
unit lineup here will be Nate

Branch, Joe Cunningham, Jackie
Jackson, Walter Robertson and
Frank Stephens.
Skeptics who think its all fun
and little basketball forget the
Trotters’ 10,730-323 won-loss rec
ord, and a game the Globetrotters
played 25 years ago on Feb. 20.
It answered the question, “How
would the Trotters fare against
top professionals? They played
the mighty Minneapolis Lakers
led by all-time great George
Mikan. And won, 61-59, before
17,000 at Chicago Stadium.
A rematch the following year
produced the same results. Inman
Jackson, an early player still
with the organization as a con
sulting coach, remembers the
Trotters were more relaxed the
second time.
“The first game I think we
outpsyched them,” says Jackson.
“But the second time we just
plain outplayed them.’’
Aggies Add 4,
32 Now Signed
A&M’s football staff added four
more names to its list of 1973
football signings yesterday.
Billy Herrin, a 6-1, 220-pound
defensive end from Baytown
Sterling, and Del Leatherwood,
a 6-2, 185-pound split end from
Houston St. Thomas, agreed to
attend A&M.
Herrin was all-district and sec
ond team all-state with 4.9 speed
in the 40-yard dash. Leatherwood
was named to the Catholic all-
state and all-America teams.
Leatherwood is a half-brother of
former Aggie great Larry
Stegent.
Anderson Harrison, 6-4, 255
pound all-state tackle from Port
Arthur Lincoln, and Greg Vorn-
kahl, 6-3, 220, tackle from New
Orleans Perry Walker have also
joined the Aggie fold.
Wednesday signings bring the
A&M signings to 32.

Metcalf Credits Sophs For Improvement
A&M Coach Shelby Metcalf
credited Wednesday the improve
ment of sophomores for his
team’s surge in its last two
games.
“Mike Floyd has really come
along,” he said at his weekly
news conference. “He’s a great
guard. And Jerry Mercer had
some toughness inside.”
Metcalf also was pleased, he
said, with the performance of
junior forward Randy Knowles.
“Randy has settled down and
started concentrating and we’re
doing a better job of getting the
ball to him,” Metcalf said.
Knowles scored 76 points and
grabbed 33 rebounds in the last
two games while hitting 33 of
49 shots from the field for 67
per cent.
The Aggies play Texas on tele
vision in Austin Saturday after
noon and Metcalf looks for a
close one.
“When these two teams get
together, it’s usually a good ball
game,” he said. “Both teams
have too much pride for it to be
otherwise. In Harry Larrabee, B.
G. Brosterhouse, Eric Grosscurth
and John Wilson, they have four
of the finest players. It’s really
impressive to see Larrabee on
and off the court. When he gradu
ates, I hope he stays in Texas.
He’s the kind of person we need.”
On the Southwest Conference
race, Metcalf said: “It’s going to
be pretty hard to catch Texas
Tech. We were picked third and
maybe we can move up, but we
have a tough road left.”
After Texas, the Aggies are
hosts to Rice, go to Tech, are at
home to SMU, and finish against
TCU at Fort Worth.
