f b Seats Available For Aggie Fans ears Host Aggies Tonight In Rematch THE BATTALION Tuesday, February 13, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 3 BILL HENRY ttalion Sports Editor Hostile crowds are nothing new the Texas Aggie basketball |m but tonight’s crowd will ely take the conference crown. l&M will do battle in Waco linst the talented Baylor Bears inning at 8 p.m. The biggest blem is that the number of gie fans will be zilch. )ue to last summer’s tornado, Llor must play its home cen ts in tiny Rena Marrs Gym nasium with a 2,500 seating ca pacity. It’s first come, first served at the gate and Baylor students are allowed to enter first. They will surely fill the place so A&M fans and students may as well stay at home and listen over the radio. The Aggies are coming off a tremendous win over the Razor- backs when, for the one of the few times this season, they put it all together. Games of this caliber don’t come often but coach Shelby Met calf’s forces hope they’ve found a key to victory. It’s too bad this key wasn’t found when the Ag gies were still in the conference race. Baylor stands 5-3 and was in the thick of the race until Satur day when the Bears fell to Texas, 77-64. The Bears still have hope but a loss tonight will drench any and all hopes. The Aggies, 4-4, could make misery for the rest of the teams on their schedule but they are already out of it as far as a cham pionship is concerned. Finishing the rest of the season undefeated, six games, could possibly garner a National Invitational Tourna ment bid but that feat will not be easy. The chance for another famous Baylor-A&M brawl is superb. There is no love lost between the two teams to begin with and A&M’s 91-80 slashing when the two met here will do little to ease the hostilities. Baylor has tremendous scoring punch with the number four and six scorers in the conference. Jer ry Ahart, who Metcalf calls “the best true shooter in the league,” is averaging 19 points per game. Charlie McKinney, Ahart’s teammate at Tyler JC last year, is averaging 18 points per game and also leads the Bears in re bounds with an 11.7 norm. That mark is good enough for third place in the SWC. Lee Griffin is the only other starter in double figures with an 11.4 norm. Baylor’s two guards will be Knot Johnson (7.5) and Steve Dallas (4.4). A&M will start the same lineup used in Saturday’s thrashing of Arkansas. Jerry Mercer, who replaced Cedric Joseph, will start again due to his tremendous defensive effort. The forwards will be Jeff Over house (14.4) and Randy Knowles (17.3) who scored a G. Rollie White record of 42 points against Arkansas. Guards will be Mario Brown (14.1) and Mike Floyd (11.9). The Aggies will travel to Aus tin Saturday to play the Long horns in another regionally tele vised contest. drive friendly' Do You Desire A Better Self Image? or Self Confidence ? Tonite Thinclads Have Good Effort In Astrodome Track Meet By BILL HENRY Battalion Sports Editor Bright spots were shown in A&M’s first track encounter Sat urday when several members of the Aggie team competed in the star-studded Invitational Astro dome Federation Track Meet. Three individuals were invited as well as three relay teams. Ben Greathouse (high jump), Scotty Jones (120-yard high hurdles) and Harold McMahon (pole vault) were asked to compete with the nation’s finest in the purely invi tational field. Greathouse was A&M’s best in dividual performer copping third place with a jump of 6-10. Win ning the event was Olympian Chris Dunn of Colgate at 7-0. Bellard Signs 3 Bluechippers The Texas Aggies grabbed two prize schoolboy football plums Tuesday by signing All-State quarterback David Shipman and: linebacker Grady Wilkerson off the Class 4A state champion Odes sa Permian Panthers. But Coach Emory Bellard of the Aggies didn’t stop there. A&M also signed All-State tackle Jim my Dean of Brazoswood and reached into Arkansas to ink All- State tight end Dennis Swilley of Pine Bluff. Shipman, Dean and Wilkerson were rated in the top 12 of schoolboy players in the state in a bluechip poll conducted by the Dallas Times Herald. Shipman said he visited Texas Tech, Texas and Baylor. “I ruled out Texas because sometihng just made me uneasy down there,” Shipman said. “I just liked A&M . . . they are a great bunch of people. They didn’t promise me I would be the start ing quarterback in the Wishbone next year. They just told me they would give me the chance.” Shipman, who scored 23 touch downs last year in guiding Per mian to an undefeated season from the triple-option Wishbone, said “I’m glad it’s over with. It has been a long haul.” jsa r • >■ No. AJ048M — $125.00 17 jewel, self-wind, Bell alarm, 98.2 ft. water tested, day-date calendar instant date change, yellow top/stainless steel back.
