Tuesday A&M was involved in
another brawl on the basketball
court.
So far the blame has rested on
two individuals, Bob Gobin, sen
ior co-captain of the Aggies, and
SMU coach Bob Prewitt, depend
ing on who you favor.
I dare say that others were
involved in the senseless confron
tation on the floor of SMU’s
Moody Coliseum.
The SMU fans and the officials
should shoulder quite a bit of the
blame for acts they committed
before the encounter.
From the outset, the officials
did not control the game or the
players. I am the first one for
allowing players to play aggres
sively, but the officials are paid
to control the game and to detect
rule violation—neither of which
was done Tuesday night.
The fans did their share of
damage by disrupting the playing
of the game throwing numerous
cups of ice on to the court. Their
mischief, along with the officials’
ineptitude, was fuel for the fire
in the tense contest.
Gobin and Prewitt do not come
out of this smelling like a rose,
don’t misunderstand that. They
both were to blame, immensely
to blame.
For Gobin, it is pure instinct
that should have been utilized on
the Astro-turf of Kyle Field, and
for Prewitt, it is pure stupidity.
Coaches that direct young men
should have enough self-discipline
not to lose control of their senses.
Now, let’s go through all the
events in that short span of time
and see what should have been
done.
It all started when A&M had
the ball out-of-bounds with four
seconds remaining and down by
one, 63-62.
The ball was thrown into Jeff
Overhouse but he was clobbered
by Ira Terrell from the back and
tiny Zack Thiel from the side and
Thiel got possession.
A foul should have been called
here, sending Overhouse to the
line to decide the outcome. But
no foul was called.
Thiel started to dribble down
court but was intentionally fouled,
unnecessarily hard, by Gobin.
Okay there is the foul and Gobin
was ejected.
Prewitt, at the very instant
Thiel hit the floor, head first,
stormed on to the court grabbing
Gobin followed by his team, both
benches and the floor-level stands.
No question, a technical foul
should have been called on Prew
itt, but again, it wasn’t. When a
coach steps on to the playing
floor, a flagrant two-shot techni
cal is automatic; not just a judg
ment call by the official. A coach
cannot come on to the court.
Well, the game is over and the
results are history. But the re
percussions that are to follow
will do much to even more tarnish
the career of Bob Gobin and to

hurt Bob Prewitt’s reputation.
“Prewitt called Wednesday
morning and apologized especial
ly to Bob and Jeff,” Metcalf said
at his Wednesday press confer
ence. “He took the full blame
and said that he just lost his
head.
“He was under no pressure to
do that and I still think he’s a
fine man.”
For Bob Gobin, however, apol
ogies will not carry much weight
due to his past record. What’s
sad is that the Bob Gobin on the
floor is much different than the
one walking around campus.
There just seems to be a little
black cloud over his head and
when something happens on the
court, he’s near.
Anyone could have been stand
ing where Gobin was Tuesday
night and would have tried to foul
Thiel trying to stop the clock in
hopes of getting the ball back.
It wasn’t anyone else, it was
Gobin.
Against TCU last week Gobin
was in a minor incident that only
could have happened to him.
He was fouled and knocked to
the floor and when he got up, he
bumped 6-11 Bill Bozeat. Bozeat,
thinking something might happen,
shoved Gobin and was ejected
while the other players kept the
two from causing even greater
problems.
Bob’s life’s ambition is to be
a coach and a great one he’ll be
if his shaky past does not inter
fere. He’s a competitor, a student
of athletics and a leader that will
Rugby Teams
Gain Victory
Both the Maroon and White
units of A&M’s rugby team open
ed season’s action with smashing
victories.
The White team, behind the bal
anced scoring of seven different
players, blanked San Antonio
26-0.
The Aggies totally dominated
the contest from start to finish
as San Antonio mounted only one
scoring threat.
The attack of the Maroon team
was just as devastating as they
swamped the Fort Worth Line
19-4.
This Saturday the rugby teams
entertain the Black and Gqld
units of the Austin Rugby Club.
The Austin Gold team was the
only team to beat the Aggies
outside of tournament competi
tion last year.
Game time is 2:30 p.m. on the
A&M drill field.

always be remembered here. But
how will he be remembered?
If you have any intentions of
going to Waco Tuesday for the
game against Baylor, forget it
because you’ll never get in the
gate. The facility Baylor plays
basketball in now holds less than
3,000 fans and the athletic de
partment lets its students in first
—just like we do. It won’t do
any good to get there early like
you do here, either, unless you
have a Baylor ID.
Twenty football prospects are
scheduled to be introduced Satur
day at halftime of the A&M-Ar-
kansas basketball game including
the state’s most sought after
player, Jeff Burgeron of Port
Neches-Groves. Coach Emory Bel-
lard and his staff have been well
received so far and a big part
of A&M’s recruiting success is
due to the spirit of you, the stu
dent body, at basketball games.
Keep up the good work and it
looks like there’ll be more to
cheer than just prospects in the
near future.
