THE BA'
Prentice Leads Improving Aggies In Op
A&M swimmers turned in sev
eral personal record times and
pleased coach Dennis Fosdick de
spite running up a 1-2 record
on the opening weekend.
The Aggies lost to a powerful
University of Texas team on Fri
day 71-42. Saturday’s action saw
A&M fall to Air Force, but re
bound against Southwest Confer
ence foe Texas Tech with a 71-41
victory.
The win against Tech was the
first of the young season for the
Aggies who are priming for the
conference meet on March 1, 2
and 3.
Fosdick was generally well
pleased with the performance
which he described as “tired, but
good swimming.
“We haven’t tapered off yet
but many of our times were com
parable to what we did in confer
ence last year when we were at
our peak. We’ve really improved
since last year.”
Last season the Aggies finished
third in the conference meet with
Fosdick being named coach of the
year. The chances of A&M im
proving on that performance are
slight with perennial champion
and national power SMU again
picked for the title. Texas is
slated for second with A&M a
solid pick for third.
Friday’s action saw A&M swim
mers win three of the 13 events.
Steve Prentice captured the 200
yard individual medley relay with
a time of 2:04.0.
Prentice also grabbed the 200
yard backstroke against Texas.
The Aggies could manage only
three wins against Air Force with
Prentice again capturing the 200
yard backstroke. Steve Moore won
the 200 yard breaststroke and
Doug Meaden grabbed the 500
yard freestyle.
Prentice again was the domi
nate force in the Tech meet win
ning the 200 individual relay and
the 200 yard breaststroke. A&M
relay teams won the 400 yard
medley and the 400 yard freestyle
against the Red Raiders.
Meaden won the 500 freestyle
and Moore captured the 500 free
