Aggie War Hymn Again Relevant As . . .
Guess Who’s Coming To G. Rollie For Actio
By BILL HENRY
Battalion Sports Editor
What makes an Aggie cringe
worse than final exams?
The Texas Longhorns and their
athletic dominance.
Well, the time is here for A&M
to avenge two losses handed it in
last year’s SWC hoop race and
the humiliating 38-3 football loss
last Thanksgiving tonight when
A&M and Texas battle hostilities
in G. Rollie White at 7:30 p.m.
The game will be a sell-out, so
if a seat is to be sat in, get to
the game early.
Texas will be trying to bounce
back from two consecutive con
ference losses to Baylor and Ar
kansas while the Aggies will try
and keep their title hopes alive.
An A&M loss tonight would be
a major deterrent to any confer
ence honors.
As most followers now know,
Texas lost the services of last
year's SWC MVP and Sophomore
of the Year Larry Robinson due
to a fractured kneecap suffered
in non-conference action.

The loss of Robinson, who aver
aged 24.3 points and nine re
bounds last season, has left coach
Leon Black’s cagers without a
consistent offensive threat.
The Longhorns, picked to re
capture last year’s crown, stands
6-7 overall and 0-2 in loop action.
Last year Texas was 17-7 overall
and tied SMU with a 10-4 loop
mark but won the right to face
Houston by defeating SMU.
The largest margin for the Ag
gies was 44 points with a 73-29
win in 1959. For Texas, the larg
est margin is 45 points with a
81-36 win in 1944.
Though certainly favored, toach
Shelby Metcalf and his cagers are
taking nothing for granted.
Texas defeated highly-favored
Houston in the pre-regionals held
in Albuquerque, N.M., but fell to
Kansas State in the NCAA re
gional tourney.
“Texas and A&M always have
a great game which the fans be
come involved in,” Metcalf said.
“The intense rivalry doesn’t quit
with football; both schools always
want to beat the other.”
that. It’s too bad about Robinson
but we’d be ready even if he were
with them. We’ve got it together
now.”
“It was great to see Jeff and
Chuck get it together against
Baylor and there’s no doubt that
we’ve got what it takes to win,”
Mario Brown said.
This will be the 137th meeting
between the two clubs with Texas
holding an 82-55 edge.
For Shelby Metcalf, however,
A&M has won 11 and lost seven.
The longest A&M win streak was
six games from the first game in
1968 to the second game in 1970.
Longest Texas streak is seven
games from the second game in
1935 through the first game, in
1938 and the first game in 1943
through the first game in 1946.
For senior center Jeff Ovet-
house it will almost assuredly
be a game he will never forget.
He needs only three points to sur
pass 1,000 in his career and be
come the seventh all-time A&M
Starting for Texas will be John
Mark Wilson (6-8) averaging 16
points, B. G. Brosterhouse (6-8)
averaging 14 points and nine re
bounds, Eric Groscurth (6-6) av
eraging 11 points, Harry Larra-
bee (5-10) averaging 11 points
and Jack Louis (6-5) averaging
8 points.
The entire team is averaging
80 points per game and 48 re
bounds. A&M is averaging 86
points and 53 rebounds.
With 17 rebounds last Satur
day, he hit 600 thus placing him
fourth in that all-time category.
“I’m really looking forward to
playing Texas this year,” he said.
“They beat us both times last
year and we need to make up for
Starting for the Aggies will be
6-8 Overhouse (14 points, nine re
bounds), 6-9 Cedric Joseph (11
pts., 10 rebounds), 6-6 Randy
Knowles (15 points, nine re
bounds), 6-2 Mario Brown (12
points) and 5-10 Mike Floyd (11
points).
A&M will travel to Houston
Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. region
ally televised conteit
Rice.
