Reserves Break Two Game Slump
Aggies Smash Bulldogs, 96-77
By KEVIN COFFEY
Assistant Sports Editor
A&M blitzed for the last 18
points of the ballgame and broke
a two and a half game slump by
blasting Texas Lutheran College
96-77 last night in G. Rollie White
Coliseum.
The Aggies were led on a sec
ond half rampage by reserves
Chuck Tone and Webb Williams
which netted 57 points and the
Aggies’ eighth win of the season.
Tone led all A&M scorers, hit
ting 10 of 15 shots for 20 points,
while Williams connected on eight
of nine aerials for 16 tallies. Wil
liams also grabbed eight rebounds.
The contest was close until the
final three minutes when A&M
stretched a four-point lead into
a 19 victory as the Bulldogs fin
ally ran out of gas.
The game was tied at 73 with
just 6:29 left to play and the
Aggies pulled to a 81-77 lead
with 3:19 left after trading bas
kets. Then the bubble burst.
Firey guard Mike Floyd hit four
straight charity tosses, added a
lay-up and Cedric Joseph tipped-
in two errant shots to put the
game completely out of reach.

Baptist Student Center - ?03 College Main
While A&M dominated most of
the play during the second half,
TLC controlled the initial period.
Mike Beucler led the attack
with 18 first half points, as the
Bulldogs led by as many as seven
in the early going.
TLC hit 56.7 percent of the
shots during that period and the
Aggies missed opportunities to
catch the hot shooting Bulldogs
by committing costly turnovers.
The shooting of Randy Knowles
kept the Aggies close in the first
half as he netted 13 points to
keep A&M in range of the Bull
dogs. A&M trailed 43-39 at inter
mission.
The Aggies started the second
half without a senior on the floor
and Tone and Williams began to
bomb the bucket. A&M tied the
score at 49 with 17:43 to play
and managed to stretch their lead
to six after trading baskets for
four minutes. Tone hit shots from
everywhere on the floor but TLC

GEflERAL TELEPHOflE COVIlPAny OF THE SOUTHUIEST
managed to tie the score at 73
before A&M made its final rally.
A&M had balanced scoring with
Knowles finishing with 19, Mike
Floyd 12, and Mario Brown 11 to
join Tone and Williams in double
figures.
Cedric Joseph totally dominated
the backboards, picking off 16
rebounds and blocking six shots
while scoring eight points.
Beucler tallied 13 of 18 shots
for 26 points to lead all scores
while Harry Miller and Jimmy
Walker added 16 and 19 points
for TLC.
The game was marred with
sloppy ball handling as TLC com
mitted 24 turnovers to the Aggies’
18. The shooting was as good as
the ball handling was bad, as both
teams ripped the bucket at almost
57 percent. A&M hit 65.7 percent
during the second half action but
could manage only eight of 15
free throws for 53.3 percent.
A&M coach Shelby Metcalf was
pleased with the second half per
formance of his Aggies and hoped
the victory would give the team
momentum for Saturday’s contest
with Baylor. “I hope it gets us
going,” Metcalf said. “It should
give us the lift we need.”
Only 3,446 fans saw the Ag
gies’ return to home after seven
straight road games, which saw
A&M run its record to 8-4 for the
year. Last night’s action was the
final non-conference contest for
the Aggies, who are currently
0-1 in loop play, but hope to better
that mark against Baylor Satur
day night in G. Rollie White.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
