Insurance Rate
Cut Expected
Next Year
AUSTIN, Tex. — Most home-
owners are expected to get a big
break on insurance rates next
year.
Exceptions will be those who
live in the 27-county Gulf Coast
area.
The industry-oriented Texas In
surance Advisory Association rec
ommended the State Board of In
surance reduce by 17.7 per cent
extended coverage (hail, wind
storm, vandalism, etc) rates and
by 16.2 per cent homeowners’
rates in the North-Northwest
area. That includes most of the
Panhandle and South Plains.
Association recommendations
for the big Central Inland ter
ritory (Dallas, Fort Worth, San
Antonio, El Paso, Austin areas)
included a 12.1 per cent decrease
in extended coverage and 10.9
per cent reduction in homeown
ers’ premiums.
The Seacoast territory (Beau-
mont-Port Arthur, Houston, Gal
veston, Corpus Christ! and
Brownsville areas) would get a
17.5 per cent hike in extended
coverage premiums and an 8.3 per
cent increase in homeowners’ pol
icy rates.
All territories would benefit
from an Association proposal to
reduce fire insurance rates state
wide by 7.7 per cent.
An Association spokesman esti
mated total savings of $6 million
for extended coverage and $9.8
million for homeowners’ insurance
in the Central Inland territory.
He calculated increases of 88 mil
lion for extended coverage and
$5.9 million for homeowners’
rates in the Seacoast territory.
The Board staff is awaiting di
rections as to whether to calcu
late new rates on its own formula
or the new recommendations.
Love Bug Lives
In The Amazon
TORONTO (A 5 ) — An amateur
Toronto entomologist has return
ed from the Amazon jungle with
thousands of tropical insects, in
cluding one called the “love bug.”
Ross Holliday, president of a
Toronto advertising agency, said
the love beetle is quite harmless
but Amazon Indians believe that
anyone bitten by the beetle should
make love within two hours or he
will die.
