The previous record was 74 set last year against Trinity. The Aggies were obviously a little shaky at first, but that can easily be blamed on opening game jitters. Overall, A&M looked tremendously tough on defense keeping the enemy far away from the boards. Metcalf’s forces have a great deal of depth this season as all eleven players could be used without any loss of effective ness. Offensively, it was a balanced attack with four of five starters hitting double figures. New comer Chuck Tone from Iowa Central JC had the hot hand for A&M, hitting for 21 points. Randy Knowles, who led the team in rebounds with 19, hit for 16 points as did Jeff Overhouse. Overhouse and sophomore Cedric Joseph, who did not start, tied for second in rebounding with 14 caroms. Every Aggie suited up scored with the exception of co-captain reserve guard Bob Gobin. Leading both teams in scoring was Wayland’s Pat Shelby who bombed in 23 points, 11 of which came on free throws. Charles Fuller was the only other Pio neer to hit in double figures with 13. From the beginning of the con test, A&M controlled the con test. With only seven minutes gone in the contest, A&M rallied for a 17 point lead, 22-5. Way- land took the lead 5-4 with one minute gone in the game, but couldn’t muster another point for eight minutes. The closest Wayland ever got in the match was nine, 36-27, with 3:00 left in the first half. “They were able to come back because I took our starters out too fast when we jumped out ahead,” coach Shelby Metcalf en tering his tenth season as head basketball coach here said. “All our players came in cold and couldn’t get untracked.” A&M closed the first half with a 14-point lead, 47-33. In the second half, it wasn’t even a contest as the Aggies put their tremendous height advan tage to use and steadily built up to the final 40-point margin. Midway in that second stanza, A&M pulled up with a 21-point lead, 70-49, and held the flustered Pioneers to only 11 points the remaining ten minutes. In that hot second half, A&M hit on 23 of 40 field goals for 58 percent, compared with only 17 of 47 for 36 percent in the open ing period. Wayland hit only 22 of 78 at tempts for a 29 percent overall shooting average. The Pioneers suffered badly in the free throw department also hitting only 16 of 28 for 57 percent. A&M hit on 20 of 27 attempts at the charity stripe. It was transfer C. W. Guthrie suffering in a missed outside shot that gave the Aggies their 100th point with 1:01 left. “I thought we had good team effort tonight,” Metcalf said aft er the contest. “We definitely have signs of being a good ball club. I was very enthused about the closeness of our group to night and the great leadership received from our two captains, Mario Brown and Bob Gobin. “We still have a lot to work on but if we keep this same type effort the rest of the season, we could be a good club.” The Aggies return for their second game Friday night in G. Cedric Joseph (24), Chuck Tone (45) and Jeff Overhouse can’t decide who’s going to come down with the ball. Watching from afar is Wayland’s Pat Shelby (35), the games leading scorer with 23.
