THE BATTALION
Two Blacks Killed At Southern University
BATON ROUGE, La. bT)—Two
young black men were killed
Thursday on the Southern Uni
versity campus during a day of
protests that began with a stu
dent takeover of the administra
tion building and included a fire
in the registrar’s office.
Raymond Potter, administrator
at Earl K. Long Hospital where
one of the victims was taken,
said a coroner’s report showed
that the unidentified victim died
of a shotgun wound.
An official denied that any of
the estimated 200 police on hand
fired any weapons at the students
other than tear gas canisters.
Gov. Edwin Edwards activated
a 700-man National Guard bat
talion soon after the violence but
did not immediately order any
troops onto the campus. The
guardsmen were gathering at an
airport about one mile from the
campus.
^ Small groups of students sat
and stood around on the campus
and a crowd of them watched
firemen extinguish a blaze which
caused an undetermined amount
of damage at the registrar’s of
fice about two hours after the
confrontation at the administra
tion building.
The university was closed and
all students except those who live
on campus in dormitories were or
dered home.
Accounts pieced together by au
thorities indicated the trouble be
gan when students, who have been
demanding a greater voice in col
lege affairs, took over the ad
ministration building. Another
crowd of students, estimated by
police at 2,000, gathered outside
the building.
Police ordered the students to
move and, according to officials,
a tear gas grenade was fired
from the crowd at the officers.
The students started throwing
things and police responded with
tear gas.
“Nobody shot one round,” Sher
iff A1 Amiss of East Baton Rouge
Parish County told the governor,
who rushed to the campus.
“We didn’t use anything but
tear gas,” Amiss said.
In an interview after the area
around the administration build
ing had been cleared, Amiss said,
“We heard two pistol shots, shots
from a pistol that came from the
crowd.”
He said of the victims: “It look
ed like they were trampled. Their
faces were all swollen.”
The violence occurred at about
the same time Edwards was tell
ing the State Board of Education
in a downtown office building
that he was giving up efforts to
negotiate with disgruntled stu
dents at the campus here and at
a branch campus in New Orleans.
All was reported quiet at the
New Orleans campus, where stu
dents ended a nine-day occupa
tion of that administration build
ing exactly one week ago in an
agreement worked out with Ed
wards.
A girl who answered the tele
phone in the office of the presi
dent of the Baton Rouge cam
pus during the student takeover
of the administration building
said as many as 2,000 students
had gone to the building to talk
to the president.
At issue, she said, was the con
tinuing controversy over requests
for student control of academic
affairs and the resignation of the
heads of both campuses. The con
troversy began at the Baton
Rouge campus in mid-October and
brought the arrests of several
earlier this week on charges of
disrupting classes.
Rainfall High Here In October
Bryan and College Station had
above average rainfall for the
third month in a row in October,
bringing the 1972 total into the
ballpark for a near normal year.
The year was running drier
than normal until August. With
last month’s 3.95-inch average
for the Carter’s Creek catchment
area, the cities are about eight
inches short of the Brazos County
annual average, 38.76 inches.
Normal rainfall for October is
three inches.

WASHINGTON (A?)—The Unit
ed States moved quickly Thursday
to arrange negotiations with Cu
ba to curb the hijacking of air
liners. The two countries have
not held substantive talks on any
matter since they broke relations
in 1961.
In an afternoon meeting, Sec
retary of State William P. Rog
ers asked Swiss Ambassador Fe
lix Schnyder to convey to Cuba
the United States’ desire to push
ahead “toward some agreement
in the most expeditious and ef
fective manner possible.”
Reporting this development,
State Department spokesman
Charles W. Bray added that the
U.S. would be willing to nego
tiate directly with the Cubans.
,But other officials said Cuba
would prefer to negotiate through
the Swiss embassy in Havana,
which handles U.S. interests in
Cuba.
Bray emphasized that any ne
gotiations which are arranged
would be restricted to the hijack
ing problem.
In Havana, Cuba, Pedro Diaz,
an official in the Ministry of For
eign Affairs, told the Miami
News by telephone the next move
on the hijacking negotiations is up
to the United States.
“We are now awaiting a reply
from the United States on our
proposal on hijackings,” Diaz
said. “Essentially Cuba is willing
to resolve the matter of hijack
ings of planes and vessels orig
inated in the United States but
we are worried about it as much
as anyone else.”
