A powerful SMU ground at
tack centered around the now fa
mous M&M boys face the Texas
Aggies Saturday afternoon on the
Cotton Bowl.
The M&M boys are Junior Al
vin Maxson and Freshman Wayne
Morris and their prolific running
has coach Hayden Fry and SMU
fans alike talking bowl game for
the Mustangs.
SMU must win their remain
ing four games in order to get
a bowl invitation and Fry stated
earlier in the week that he
thought they would do just that.
Maxson and Morris are both
averaging just under 100 yards a
game this year and Maxson was
all-SWC as well as the offensive
sophomore of the year in 1971.
The Mustangs, (4-3), will run
from a multiple of offensive for
mations and changing according
to the defense.
At the beginning of the sea
son, the M&M boys alternated at
fullback, but now FTy uses both
in the same backfield. They are
joined by junior lettermen Keith
Bobo.
Bobo took over the starting
job from Casey Ortez after Bobo
led the Mustangs to a second half
routing of New Mexico State 56-6.
The Mustang wingback is Ran
dy Gosso, a one year letterman,
who is an excellent receiver.
The Pony offensive line has
Kelly Arnold and Don Doweber at
tackles; Bill Thomas and Tom
Black at the guards spots and
Mike Haynes at center.
Tight end for the Mustangs is
Rory Best. He is considered an
excellent blocker and keeps the
defense honest with his sure
hands.
The Mustang split receivers are
a threat to score on any play.
Freshman Ken Harrison and
sophomore Rufus Shaw both have
great hands and tremendous
speed. Almost all of Bobo’s
passes will be directed at these
two receivers.
The SMU defense is fortified
by safety Robert Popelka. He has
led the Mustangs in interceptions
two straight years and is a shoe-
in for all-SWC and all-America
honors.
The Pony defense has been
stingy during the season, only
giving up an average of 11 points
a game. They are one of the top
defenses in the nation against the
run.
The defense sets up with Steve
Morton and Ed Johnson at the
end spots with Louie Kelcher and
Don Randell at guards.
The SMU linebackers are Mack
Rogers, Leonard Carey and Ted
Thompson. Carey was an all
American junior college player at
Kilgore.
The Mustang pass defense has
Doug Berg and Andy Duvall at
the corners and Bobby White and
Popelka at the safety spots.

Red has received publicity in
many major publications includ
ing the Reader’s Digest, Argosy,

was also Technical Advisor on
the movie “HELLFIGHTERS”
starring John Wayne. The movie
was about the life and occupation
of Red Adair.
During his leisure time the for

races power boats and attends
major automobile races. Red was
a pioneer in bringing power boat
racing to the southwest.
Only a man of Red Adair’s dar

exchange his ride in the safety
car for a chance to drive a thirty-
eight hundred pound stock car in
the Texas 500.
