Top Stars Entered
Texas 500 Qualifying Begins Friday
SWC Championship Meet Here Monday
Qualifying for the third annual
Texas 500 will be more of a chal
lenge than finishing the race.
Over seventy drivers have al
ready entered the rich 500-mile
race and only forty of the elite
group will be allowed to take the
green flag. Among these is Pete
Hamilton.
Hamilton, the 1968 NASCAR
Rookie of the Year has entered
the rich Texas 500 at the two-
mile, high banked Texas World
Speedway.
He will be seeking his fourth
win on a super speedway.
The Dedham, Massachusetts
native was the fastest qualifier
for last year’s Texas 500 and will
attempt to take the pole position
honors again this year along with
the 400-pound bull calf that will
be presented as the qualifying
trophy.
Hamilton enjoyed his most suc
cessful year on the NASCAR
Grand National circuit in 1970
while driving for the famed Petty
team. He was the surprise win
ner of the Daytona 500 and fin
ished the season with wins in
both the Alabama 500 and the
Talladega 500 at the Alabama In
ternational Motor Speedway.
The 30-year old Plymouth driv
er is among eight National Cham
pions entered in the 500-mile
event. They include Richard Pet
ty, the NASCAR Grand National
Champion; Bobby Allison, former
Modified titleholder; Tiny Lund,
the NASCAR Grand American
champ; Ron Hutcherson, current
Automobile Racing Club of Amer
ica National Champion and for
mer ARCA title winners, Ramo
Stott and Benny Parson. A. J.
Foyt, who won the US AC Cham
pionship division title five times

A&M Sports Car Club will
meet in the Mimosa Room of the
Old College Station City Hall,
110 Church St., at 7:30 p.m.
A&M Concert and Stage Band
will meet in the basement of the
MSC at 6:30 p.m. All musicians,

Love of God” at 7:30 p.m. in the
MSC Assembly Room. The pro
gram is open to the public.
MSC Bridge Committee will
meet in Room 3B and 3C in the
MSC at 7:30.
THURSDAY
South Louisiana Hometown Club
will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the
main lobby of the MSC.
Pre-Yet Society will meet at
7:30 p.m. in the Zachry Engi
neering Center Auditorium. The
program will be the Aquatic
Veterinary Medicine.
Texas Society of Professional
Engineers will meet at 6 p.m. at
the new Crown and Anchor Res
taurant 3.5 miles from Highway 6
on Highway 30 (Huntsville Road).
The program will be presented by
Jerry Coffee of the Boeing Cor
poration in Houston. Dinner will
be held at 7.
Dr. John C. Hill, TAMU as
sistant professor of physics, will
lecture on “Experimental Investi
gation of Neutron Rich Nuclei”
at 4 p.m. in Physics Room 146.
A&M Student Civil Liberties
Union will meet in Room 123 of
the Academic Building at 8 p.m.
A&M Chapter of Data Process

is also entered.
The Texas 500 is the last
chance for the top twenty drivers
in the NASCAR Winston Cup
point standings to gain those val
uable points for the extra gold
in the Winston Cup payoff. Driv
ers and crew members will have
to make every effort to make the
field because the only way to ac
cumulate points is to start the
race.
The fastest qualifier will re
ceive a bonus other than the usual
trophy and cash awards.
Teleprompter Corporation in
New York City is presenting the
pole position winner with a four-
hundred pound bull.
Tim Sullivan, spokesman for
the firm said, “This is the first
time that Teleprompter has spon
sored an award that will increase
in both size and value.”
Qualifying trials for the first
twenty positions are set for Fri
day, November 10th and the sec
ond twenty will be determined on
Saturday, November 11th.
Start of the third annual Texas
500 is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on
Sunday, November 12th.
The 1972 Southwest Conference
Cross Country Championship will
be held at A&M at 11 a.m. Mon
day, Nov. 13.
All nine SWC schools will have
entries in the four-mile race
which will be run on the A&M
golf course. The meet will mark
the second appearance of the Uni
versity of Houston as an SWC
championship competitor. The
Cougars made their first appear
ance last month in the SWC golf
tournament.
A&M track coach Charley
Thomas expects a very close race
for the team and individual hon
ors. “Anyone of five teams could
win it,” Thomas said. “SMU re
turns all of its team which won
the meet last year, but they only
finished fifth in the NCAA qual
ifier in Houston.”
In the NCAA region six meet,
Arkansas was first, followed by
Rice, Houston, Texas and SMU,
Baylor was ninth and A&M was
11th.
A&M’s Frank Ybarbo, who won
the individual title last year, also
returns. Top challengers for the
individual title will be Ricky Yar
brough, first in the NCAA re
gional, and Tim Patton of Texas,
Steve Houk of Arkansas, second
in the NCAA, Pete Morales of
Baylor, Mehdi Jaouhar of Hoi
ton and Jeff Wells and JohnL|
wick of Rice.
