Page 6 College Station, Texas Friday, November 3, 1972 THE BATTALION ! \ Aggies Hope For Rerun Of ’71 Will Skid Be Broken Saturday? By BILL HENRY Battalion Sports Editor Coach Frank Broyles came to College Station for the first time in 1958 with his Razorbacks standing 0-6. When he left that evening, he had won his first SWC football game, 21-8. It’s 1972 now with Emory Bel- lard and his Aggies standing 1-6 having yet to win a conference contest. Will the tables be turned? Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Kyle Field the question will be answered. Last year, as most everyone knows, the Aggies pulled the up set of the SWC race with a 17-9 win in Little Rock. The Aggies brought a dismal 2-5 record into that game but a tremendous de fensive effort kept the Razor- backs away from the goal line. A<&M’s defense has many of the same faces back except in the secondary where the Razor- backs are most likely to strike with the arm of All-America candidate J6e Ferguson. It was not the lack of passing that kept Arkansas away from the Aggie goal, but a favorite trick A&M has mastered, fum bles. The Razorbacks lost three fumbles and had one pass inter cepted. Ferguson did however hit on 31 of 51 attempts for 345 yards. Last year Arkansas stood with a 6-1 record including a 31-7 shelling of Texas to make them odds-on favorites to take the SWC crown until the Aggie game. This year there will be no Cot ton Bowl bid for Arkansas unless something drastic happens to Texas, but the Razorbacks have a grudge to get off their chests. For the Aggies, many frown ing faces would automatically turn to smiles forgetting past performances. This will be the 46th game with Arkansas holding a 26-16-3 margin. The Aggies won the first game back in 1903, 6-0. Broyles is in his 15th year now at Arkansas having a record of 117-39-2. He has guided the Ra zorbacks to six SWC titles, nine post season bowl games and a national championship. Both the Aggies and the Razor- backs have had disheartening seasons so far. Arkansas was picked by many to win the na tional championship before the season started and picked by all to win the conference crown. Both those dreams have gone down the drain for Broyles and his Razor- backs with losses to Southern Cal and Texas. Joe Ferguson was picked by many to win the Heisman Tro phy, but that too has gone down the drain with the two losses and two lackluster one-point wins over Oklahoma State and Tulsa. The Aggies were picked a strong third in the SWC but those hopes have fallen dismally to the ground with six straight losses. The key to the football game will be whether the Aggie defense can hold the prolific offense sup plied by Arkansas. Arkansas’ Dickey Morton leads the SWC in rushing with 112 yard average through seven games. He has run for over 100 yards on eight occasions in his two varsity seasons. A&M can move the football against Arkansas as the Razor- back defense has been suspect through the entire season. But the Aggies must mount more of a punch when the goal line is near than they have in past games. Statistically the Aggies have done superb in most games, but have not been able to take the ball in to score. Fumbles, penal ties and broken assignments have been the margin of defeat for A&M in all its games so far this year. There have been two changes in the offensive line this week for the Aggies. Freshman Henry Tracy, who started at right guard last week, has replaced Skip Kuehn at center this week in practice and will start if Kuehn’s arm injury persists. At his right guard position will be freshman Dennis Smelser, 6-5, 250. The rest of the line will be the same, with Richard Osborne and Carl Roaches alternating at split end, Mike Park at left tackle, Ricky Seeker at left guard, Ralph Sacra at right tackle and Homer May at tight end. Mark Green is slated to see ac tion for the first time since in juring his knee against TCU two weeks ago at left halfback. Don Dean will be at quarterback, Brad Dusek at fullback and B u b b a Bean at right half. There were no changes on de fense with Max Bird and Paul Hulin at ends, Boice Best and Bill Wiebold at tackles, and Ed Simonini, Grady Hoermann and Kent Finley at linebackers. The secondary will be made up of Corky Sheffield and Robert Mur- ski at cornerbacks and Larry El lis and A1 Thurmond at safeties. The game will be broadcast in 21 Texas cities, including WTAW in Bryan. Connie Alexander and Dave Smith will do the play-by- play over the Humble Radio Net work. Bud Campbell will do the play- by-play for the 93-station net work in Arkansas.
