It’s Not Baylor Homecoming
For Former Bryan Native
WACO — When Baylor sopho
more tackle Joe Johnson lines up
against Texas A&M Saturday
night he’s going to have a lot
of inspiration going for him.
In the first place he was born
and raised in Bryan, the home
of the Cadets. In the second place
he thinks two straight losses are
enough. And in the third place
he wants to provide Coach Grant
Teaff witth a Homecoming vic
tory.
The 6-0, 208-pounder actually
has a fourth reason in that the
Aggies talked to him about stay
ing at home for his college edu
cation, but when signing date
came around never came forth
with the scholarship offer.
It was Teaff who put the spot
light on Johnson back in the
spring when he shifted the quiet-
spoken youngster from noseguard
to defensive tackle. “I said at the
time that he was going to be the
sophomore of the year in the con
ference, and I’m not changing my
mind now,” Teaff pointed out
Sunday as he graded films of the
Baylor loss at the hands of Ok
lahoma State.
"Joe came through with an in
spired tackle as he ended one of
the greatest goal line stands I’ve
seen as the half ended Saturday,”
Teaff said. “He got through and
got to the fullback about the same
time the ball did. He really came
through with a heroic effort and
we went to the dressing room
with a 7-0 lead.
Johnson said he thought that
he played “pretty good” against
Oklahoma State, but that he
would have to wait on the films
to be graded before he could be
sure. “I didn’t get beat too many
times, though,” he said. (For the
record Joe got eight tackles and
six assists.)
The former All-District nose-
guard at S. F. Austin High came
to Baylor “because I liked the
people and campus, and generally
what the coaches wanted to do.”
He was a starting noseguard on
a freshman team that won only
one game and admits “You’re al
ways discouraged when you lose.”
This spring he made the transi
tion to tackle and has had a tre
mendous start toward the goal
Teaff has pointed out for him.
Against Georgia he outgraded the
heralded Millard Neely and got
six tackles and four assists. To
date he’s had 26 unassisted tackles
and 29 assists.
The best thing about the Baylor
defense this year? “It’s got to
be that we are getting to the ball
quicker. That helps to keep the
runner from breaking tackles. Of
course, spirit plays a big part.
Coach Pat Culpepper and Roger
Goree make sure that we don’t
forget what we’re out there for.
They’re super leaders.”
Johnson says that there is little
talking in the defensive huddle.
“Roger calls the signals and that’s
it. However, when we get on the
sidelines he usually calls us over
and we get things straightened
out.”
Johnson says he thinks the
Bears can snap back off twin
losses at the hands of Arkansas
and Oklahoma State and put it
all together against the Aggies.
“Even though we can win the rest
of them,” Johnson declared Sun
day, “I think this game against
Texas A&M can be a turning
point. We really need a confer
ence win. That’s what I want . . .
to win a conference game and get
back in the conference race.
That’s why you are going to see
us giving our best Saturday night
against the Aggies.”
And the young man from Bryan
would like to be a leader in that
effort . . . just for old times sake.
