Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, October 11, 1972 THE BATTALION Homer To Face Hometown Folks Saturday If there is one opponent Texas A&M’s Homer May would like to beat, it is Texas Tech, for a cou ple of reasons. The first - is that the Aggie tight end played his high school ball in Lubbock. The second is that if the Aggies are going to make any sort of move toward the first division finish predicted for them, they had better get started. This will be May’s last chance against the Red Raiders, and he would like to make the most of it. As a sophomore, he caught a 24- yard pass which set-up the only A&M score in a 21-7 loss. Last year, his touchdown catch put the Aggies on the board in a 28-7 loss. This year, May’s fortunes have paralleled that of the team. He caught a touchdown pass in each of the first two games, then had one fall just out of reach against LSU which would have given the Aggies the lead at halftime and perhaps have turned the game around. Then on Friday before the Army game. May came down with a virus and did not play. During that four day bout with the flu, Homer lost between 10 and 12 pounds. “He’s back at full speed,” Bel- lard said. “That lost weight means he’s lost some strength and will not be at full speed, how ever.” May had a 102-degree fever that night against Army but he had to be with his team no mat ter at what expense. May has a lot of bad memories about last year’s game with Tech, and he’d like to wipe them out when the Raiders come to Kyle Field Oct. 14. “We were lousier that night than ever before. I could just have died,” May re calls. “I’d like to make up for that, and to get us back on the track this year.” The 6-3, 230-pound senior has been one of the leaders on the Aggie squad since breaking into the starting lineup as a sopho more. He has been named to the All-Southwest Conference team. His career statistics at A&M show 47 catches for 854 yards and eight touchdowns. His hands and speed are above average, and his blocking ability has steadily improved. Aggie coach Emory Bellard cautions against letting May’s appearance be deceptive. “Homer doesn’t have that lean and taut look you normally expect from a tight end. Really, he’s not a like ly looking athlete, but the fact is he’s a very fine player and a darn fine young man.” Getting May back in the lineup is bound to help the Aggies.
