King Football’s Court Keeps
Gymnastics Team As Prince
By KARL JACKSON
Although football is generally
considered the king of sports, a
number of smaller and almost un
known athletic teams here on
campus make up the king’s court.
Gymnastaics is one of those
sports. With a small squad of 23
men and women, the gymnastic
team competes in state-wide com
petition in various invitational

meets with several college across
Texas.
Presently, the team’s schedule
includes meets with San Jacinto
Jr. College in Houston, Univer
sity of Texas and Pan Am Col
lege. These meets, which start in
February will culminate with a
state meet at San Jacinto in
March.
Under the leadership of Coach
Max Stratton, the team is engag
ed in conditioning exercises for
the up-coming season. Workouts
are in the Apparatus Room of G.
Rollie White and last from 5-7
p.m. and are closely supervised.
With guidance from the Texas
Intercollegent League and
NCAA rules, the list of events or
apparatus for the girl’s team is
the balance beam, free exercise,
side horse vaulting and uneven
parallel bars.
Men’s competition is done with
rings, parallel bars, vaulting, free
exercise, side horse and the high
horizontal bars.
Each apparatus is judged on a
difficulty factor and the routine
must include certain moves and
actions.
“You pick a routine and stick
with it all year long,” said Sam
Seidel. “Every meet, its the same
routine until you have it down
perfect, without even a wobble.”
Points are awarded on the basis
of difficulty versus form. Indi
vidual scores are compiled into a
team score.
“We were hampered last year
by an all-freshman team,” said
Seidel. “As a team, we did al
right, considering the experience
but this year’s team will be a lot
stronger and better.”
