Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, September 20, 1972 THE BATTALION Dwight LaBauve Ready For LSU Homecoming Playing LSU in Baton Rouge is not just your ordinary Satur day football game. The fans are as much a spectacle as the play- 'ers, and 67,000 fanatics scream ing “Tiger Bait! Tiger Bait!” would put the early Romans to shame. But you don’t have to tell any of this to Texas A&M safety Dwight LaBauve. The 6-1, 188- pound junior was born and grew up in Lafayette, La., almost in the shadow of Tiger Stadium, and he knows what it’s all about. “I guess I’ve seen 30 or 40 games there,” LaBauve said. “My dad has season tickets, and we didn’t miss a home game.” Then how did he ever get to Texas A&M ? “When I had my visits to LSU, they kept talking about the knee I hurt in high school and how I might not be able to play. But A&M didn’t say anything about it. And then I had a good friend in Ross Brupbacher who went to A&M, and he sold me on it.” It will still be a homecoming of sorts for LaBauve. “I have a lot of friends playing for LSU. Binks Miciotto (LSU defensive end) is my best friend. He and I and Lex James (Aggie QB) went to Aspen, Colorado, skiing last winter, and we tease each other all the time. “Lex and Binks became really good friends and ribbed each other about the game this year,” Dwight said. “Binks said he’s go ing to tear Lex up on the option and Lex says he’s gonna run circles around Binks.” He feels things will be differ ent than they were against Ne braska. “All I could think about last week was Rodgers and that I wasn’t going to let him get away from me. Well he didn’t but I left a lot of gaps open that 1 should have covered.” This Saturday will be the first time for LaBauve as a starter in Tiger Stadium. Last year he let tered playing mostly on the spe cialty teams. He gained a repu tation as an aggressive, reckless player, but has learned to temper that enthusiasm. “LaBauve is quick and tough,” says defensive coordinator Melvin Robertson. “He’s learning to play under con trol and to read his keys. He has a chance to be a real good one.” LaBauve moved into the No. 1 safety position in the spring and has gained confidence in his first two games. The secondary learned a lot against Nebraska last week and the experience should help against the Tigers. It better, be cause in Bert Jones, LSU has a passer who hit 50 of 80 with no interceptions in his last six games last year.
