half, Sandy’s family moved to
Miehigan, where she worked with
Michigan State University coach
for a year. While living in Wash
ington, D.C., Sandy studied at
the YMCA under American in
structors for four years. In Day-
ton, Ohio, she worked out with
the Wright-Patterson air force
base club before going to Miami.
Fencing is a family hobby with
the McKenzies. While in Europe,
Mr. McKenzie was a United States
Air Force champion in both foil
and saber. He also tryed out for
the 1964 U.S. Olympic team. San
dy’s sister trained with her in
Europe.
Sandy works exclusively with
foil, a long sword with a point
but no cutting edge. Women can
not officially compete with a sa
ber, a sword utilizing point and
sharp cutting edge. “The reason
ing behind this is,” Sandy said,
“fencing was not originally a

ing is dangerous and aggressive.

Being left-handed, Sandy has a
natural advantage over any right-
handed fencer of comparable
skill. “The right arm is a natural
daifence, and the opponent is
confused because my moves are
backwards to him,” Sandy said.
“I used to listen to my dad talk
about the different nationalities
he fenced against while in Eu
rope,” Sandy said. “The Hun
garians are excellent in both
blade and footwork. The French
are more artistic.”
Concerning Americans in in
ternational fencing competition
Sandy feels that they are up and
coming. “But Americans don’t go
in much for artistic sports that
take years to perfect,” Sandy
said. “I’ve been fencing for ten
years and am considered a sec
ond rate fencer.”
“It is a total sport using both
mind and body,” informed Sandy.
“It’s like playing chess while
running.”
Though she has not competed
in any officially sanctioned meets,
Sandy has experience in dual
competition. “At the YMCA in
Washington, we had round robins
and interclub meets,” Sandy said.
